Hi, When the washer acts up in the rinse cycle, will it try and fill and then the water starts going out the drain hose? If this is the case, the drain hose is either needs to be raised to be as high as the top of the washer or, it needs to have a loose fitting where it goes into the drain pipe so it can have air **** back into the drain hose after it releases the wash water.
i know this is a lot of info that might not even be the answer but, I am giving you the most common fix. Please let me know if I have answered your question or let me know if I can assist you further.
If this does not seem to be the answer, maybe I need clarification.

You say washer fills and then you say no water is entering the washer?? Burning smell is most likely motor overheating due to maybe something stuck in drain Pump.

The washer only fills halfway up during rinse cycle only, even on high water setting. it fill completely during the wash cycle.

Has it always done this or just recently? Some washers have lower rinse fills then spray the water on the clothes as it goes through its cycle.

Kenmore 80 series washer will sometimes not fill in rinse cycle, sometimes half fill, sometimes 1/4. fills fine for start but not rinse????

HI, This will be the result of a failing control sector. The control sector can be a timer module, or a single printed circuit board. In any case, this will be your culprit. Have this damaged control replaced, asap. Once replaced, your unit will operate correctly.

Shutting down on rinse cycle

Hi this could means that you may need to replace the washing machine bearings. Once the bearings are bad, the motor overheats and it will automatically shut down after the first rinse.
