Scan the your computer and smartdisk for viruses
the problem you are mentioning about the desktop icons could be due to viruses
also run chkdsk utility on the smart drive after virus scan

My garmin 530hcx has locked up on the opening screen...is there a master reset sequence? I have removed the batteries and still won't work! Also, it won't shut off once turned on and locked...

f a device is locking up and has a long noise or beep when powering down, this is due to hidden data being transferred to the microSD data card. These hidden files and folders are being created by the computer and sent to the data card in addition to the maps, waypoints, routes, tracks and pictures that were selected. The following GPS units could experience this issue.
  • eTrex Legend Cx
  • eTrex Legend HCx
  • eTrex Venture Cx
  • eTrex Vista Cx
  • eTrex Vista HCx
  • GPSMAP 60Cx
  • GPSMAP 60CSx
  • GPSMAP 76Cx
  • GPSMAP 76CSx
  • Rino 520HCx
  • Rino 530HCx
To prevent this issue when the device is shutting down delete these extra unused or hidden files and folders from the data card. Examples of these folders are: .Trashes and .Spotlight-V100 folders. Since the Mac OS adds hidden files and folders to mounted removable drive volumes this process cannot be done on a Mac and will need to be done after every time the data card is mounted as a volume on a Mac.
To delete these folders the device will have to be placed into USB Mass Storage mode. To do this:
  1. Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable
  2. Go to the Main Menu
  3. Select Setup
  4. Select Interface
  5. Select USB Mass Storage Mode
The device is now in USB Mass Storage Mode. At this time a window should open on the computer desktop displaying Removable Disk at the top. The Garmin folder will be displayed. Open the Garmin folder.
Do NOT delete the the following files:
  • gmapsupp.img
  • gmapsupp.unl
  • gmapsupp.gma
These files contain supplemental mapping. If delete will cause the mapping to be erased or unviewable.
If there are other folders or files on the data card, delete these. Some of these files or folders may be hidden and therefore will need to be unhidden*. Once you have done so, please disconnect the device from the computer and power it up.
*Note: To Display a file folder that is hidden:
  1. Select the Tools option on the window that appears on the computer when the device is in USB Mass Storage Mode
  2. Select Folder Options
  3. Select View
  4. Open the Files and Folders folder
  5. Open the Hidden Files and Folders folder
  6. Select Show hidden files and folder
  7. Select Apply
  8. Select OK
Once all of the hidden files and folders have been removed from the microSD Card the unit will not

On my smartdisk firelite the conection that excepts the usb cable has broken. I need data thats on the hard drive how would I get this info off the firelite?

you can open the case and remove the hard drive and install it in a new external usb case for it.
you can find out what type of case you need after you open it. it could be either a SATA connection or IDE.
If it is a SATA and you got a SATA cable/power you could also just install it directly into your computer and grab the files you need.

Go to the applications folder and then utilities open Disk Utility in the left box select you firelite and then clcik on the erase tab to your right. You can then select how you are going to format the hard drive standard for using with Mac only machines is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or if you want to use with both PC and Macs is MS-DOS (FAT). Then name your drive and click on erase. Hope this helps.

Connect it to a different DESKTOP computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

I want to reuse this drive on a new MAC, how do I clean the old information off the drive?

Do you want to use it as an external USB hard drive?
If so connect it to a USB hard drive adapter case and connect it to the MAC and either delete the folders and filed OR format the hard disk.

Dear Support team, I have a smartdisk 80GB FireWire Hard Drive Model FWFP80EU. I had this connected to my previous mac. i have now sold mac for a toshiba P100 satelite which does not seem work. Also have...

Smartdisk's website reports that drives with model numbers beginning with "FWFP" do not require a driver to work with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. You may want to check to make sure you are plugging the drive into a working USB port (switch the port you plug it in to).

Also, observe the way the computer reacts when you plug it in. Do you hear any sounds, or see anything in the lower right corner indicating it's trying to install anything?

I'm no MAC expert, but I would first try a new cable, then try a different computer...if neither works, it's the drive. If you're really desperate, and brave, open the case and try the hard drive inside either in a different enclosure, or connect it to an internal cable if you can. If you can hear the drive spinning up, it shouldn't be bad, so one of the above may save your data. If not, reply here, I know a major MAC guru who may have a better idea on what to do.
