Question about Denon D-M50S CD Shelf System

Denon UD-M50 cd changer. Need help extracting drawer for home repair!

HI there, my Denon UD-M50 cd changer has gone wrong - tray stuck out and althought motor seems to be trying to draw it back in it gets stuck. I've located some instructions on the net as to how the trays should sit in the drawer, but have to confess that I can't see how to extract the tray from the unit. I have the unit open. But there seems to be one screw on the cd changer down the side I can't access, unless I need a special type of screwdriver! I'm a total novice but willing to give it a go if I can get this unit repaired. Can anyone tell me how to extract the CD changer drawer? THANKS!

    Hi KathyKate

If you are still having the same problem with your denon UD-M50 I might be able to help. I have fixed a number of them in the past and have the necessary maintenance manual and knowledge of a company that can supply spare parts. Disassembly looks very complex, especially when the problem is with the carousel but once you have an understanding of the mechanism it's not that difficult. Care should be taken when manually removing and reloading the disc trays as damage can result to the 'Teeth' alongside each. Spare trays are available. All my repairs involved the removal of the carousel mechanism in order to align the trays. I can copy the relevant sections of the manual dealing with the re-alignment which is critical but again if followed exactly you should have no trouble. If you respond with an Email address, I will be only too pleased to forward you the schematics etc.

    Regards Ibbotsnm

Have posted my email address for you to contact me as I'd like to talk with you about possible repair. I decided it was too much for me and took it to a small repair shop, they've told me it needs a new tray but probably because they don't know much about it?

There appears to have been a comms problem. I sent two Emails with attachments containing the repair manual schematics on the 22nd Dec.
I also sent them to myself as a check and I did receive them. It's a little late now perhaps but if you still need them I will forward them on to you. Sorry about that.

I am struggling to understand the cd tray formation and movement of the Denon UD-M50. Tray will come out but will not swap cd's and shut. Coming up with a mechanical error fault. A manual / drawing would be of great benefit to try and sort this problem. Would be very grateful if anyone could help, hopefully resulting in a solution to this problem. If this does i will post a step by step guide on how to sort this problem. Any solutions/ files can be sent to me on gazscott2002@yahoo.co.uk. Many thanks.

Same problem here too although I'm saving one I found thrown out on th street last night.

Regarding screws retaining the carosel - one is accessed through a hole in the heatsink and other than that, they are all accessible with a longish screwdriver.

It would seem that alighnment of the trays is the key here and of course avoiding any broken cog teeth etc by forcing the mechanism.

I'm going to take it apart completely and see how it works, then put it together... I'll post up any advice.

I have obviously been doing quite well as my system has been Ok for about 7 years. Sadly I now seem to be in the same boat as many others.

Checking the thread out above I note there are promises of schematics etc if someone gets to the bottom of this - the question is, have they and are they willing to share?

    Hi,

Guess what! I experienced the same problem as apart from the CD changer which I agree appears to have been put together as an afterthought, the Denon is a great Hi-Fi unit and i would be ever so sad to lose it but the sum I was quoted for fitting a replacement carousel is not economic sense to say the least.

I would also be very grateful for the tray schematics. The carousel has been taken apart & removed and appears to be undamaged, but I need the manual to re-assemble and re-align.

    My email address is mikefinelli@tiscal.co.uk.

I would be most grateful for the information.

    regards

    Mickeyfin

I located an american website www.user-manuals.com
They charge $14.99 (£7.50 ish) for a PDF Download of the UDM50 service manual plus 000's of other models & makes. Website looks kosher but not ordered yet.
trust this helps.

Sure, I can help.

I have the same problem with the DM-50 carousel. I disassembled the unit last night. Very poor design. There are a lot of electronics afterthoughts that make disassembly very tedious.

However to extract the mechanical mechanism from the faceplate and the rest of the unit requires this general process. Before you get started, make sure to ground yourself to eliminate any static electricity that might destroy sensitive chips on the boards.

- the faceplate is constructed in two sections: aluminum exterior and silvered plastic mounting interior
- locate the two retension clips on the upper ledge of the plastic (between the copper foil grounding strips)
- as you depress these clips - it might require some gentle finagling as the plastic buttons and various contours get in the way - it will basically free the aluminum
- underneath you will see two mounting screws that secure the mechanism to the face
- before you remove, take care to disconnect the CD transport output lines and the main circuit board ribbon.. among others, I don't remember possibly

I hope this is complete enough. Be very careful, the unit is full of cross cables and messy wiring.. looks like Denon doing fixes to save money instead of redesigning altogether.

Please, if you can help me locate the service manual or other diagrams instructing how to reassemble the carousel, Please let me know. I would greatly appreciate!

Good luck!
John

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

As there may be other factors at play that require a more detailed explanation, I would suggest that you seek a resolution through a discussion with a qualified technician. To do this, refer to your operating manual, which should provide a telephone number for technical contact assistance. You can also go up to the manufacturer's website and make contact for advice. www.denon.com/

I have the Denon Personal Component System UD-M10, It is a mini size and includes a tuner/amp, 3disk CD changer, and a bi-directional cassette tape player. It was bought about 2001. The CD changer stopped...

Hi,
Your suspicions about a broken belts are probably exactly right.
Here's what you can do or attempt to do.
Make sure the machine is unplugged.
Remove the cover of the unit. You may be able to manipulate the cd changer mechanism so that you can replace the belts connected to the door mechanisms. Since I am not there and I don't know how your unit is constructed I would advise to be VERY patient and exacting while doing this.
DON'T FORCE ANYTHING. And use good lighting so you can observe how it functions.

I have replaced a lot of belts on various types of CD transports and there is a certain similarity they all have. Inevitably they all have some small belt that rotates a gear mechanism that moves the transport drawer or section in and out.
Of course you can get it serviced by a professional, who will do as I suggest. But if you are confident that you can do it. Have at it.
The only problem I can imagine is locating an electronics supply house in your area.
You may be able to get a full set of belts from Denon.
I hope this helps you.
Best Regards,
Mark

Deneon UD M50 - Tray jam

It sounds like the cd tray has been forced shut and has been damaged when you got the CD's out. If it was me I would of unscrewed the casing and retrieved the CD's that way instead of trying to force the try open which I'm assuming you have done.

It could just be a simple matter of just slightly adjusting the internal CD mechanism so that it can open and close properly without jamming. The error message comes up because the tray cant eject properly. The worse case scenario is that the CD mechanisam would need to be replaced. Not a hard job for a service engineer, if you dont fancy taking the thing apart yourself then a service centre is your best bet.

I have an denon ud m50 multi cd player and reciever some one tried to put more than 1 cd in the same tray and it now will not accept any so its a mechanical problem can this be fixed and if possible...

Yes this is fixable by rebuilding the loading mechanism. As long as the mechanism is just jammed and no parts are broken, this should only cost the labor charge at a local service shop. I have done a number of these in the past and while not the simplest of mechanisms, it is fairly straightforward.
