Question about RTO Weller D550 Soldering Gun

1 Answer

Weller D550 fried brand new tip

D550 I've had for maybe 20 years but only use maybe every 2-3 years. Just tried to solder a connection and the tip fried - looks like it's tinning bubbled up. Thought maybe a problem with old tip, put new tip on and same result.

Lights work fine. Tips were tight in gun. Took gun apart and checked connections, all looks good.

I have recently bought a Weller 201 soldering iron, but in a very short space of time out of 2 projects it has made the glass crack in 2 out 3 projects. Could it be getting too hot.

You need to adopt an on-off-on---- action to control maximum temperature. Try to keep the tip so that the solder flows properly, but the tip doesn't try to burn up. Hope this helps!

I have a couple of Weller d550 Solder guns and am in need of replacement light bulbs for either side of the tip. Do you have them or can you direct me to someone who does? I am on the west coast. Don

Howdy, here is a solid vendor of weller parts and accessories who has the bulbs you are looking for.

How can I check if the D550 is delivering full heat. I sense that it is not operating to full potential. Thanks/Marv

It probably isn't; the tightness of the nuts is critical since any resistance at that point will reduce the current flow and cause the tip to heat slowly or not at all. The element will also oxidize at its connection point too which also causes a loss of current over time.

Lights don't go no weller d550

I cannot see by the picture if you have one or two light bulb model, but if you have the 2 bulb, then you must know that these bulbs are in series so they both must be good and they have to be 1,5 volt bulbs each or you will get a very dull light. If it is a single bulb, then you need to check the screw-in socket and check the bulb with an ohm meter or continuity tester. iF ALL TESTS OK, THEN THE PROBLEM IS INTERNAL AND YOU WILL HAVE TO OPEN THE GUN OR JUST FORGET IT. GOODLUCK, MACGIVOR.

Intermittent heat on Weller D550 although lights stay on. When not working, moving the terminals may get it to start working again. Sometimes, just moving the gun will interrupt the heat. Continuity...

Heat gun tips often get bad electrical connection where the nuts tighten to the tip ends. Remove the tip, clean the ends, re-install the tip, making sure the nuts TIGHTEN onto the tip ends. Your problem is common and always caused by a poor connection at the tip ends/nuts.
