Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook
Hi. i have a notenbook, Dell Inspiron 6400 with WinXP SP2, 1gb Ram, with drivers up to date, especially sound cause i thought that was the problem but no, the sound is breaking when i play mp3 or movie. from dell.com i got the drivers. any suggestions?
This is very likely, as you note, a driver problem. Start by installing the latest DirectX package from Microsoft and rebooting.
In device manager, find the sound card and then click UNINSTALL HARDWARE or REMOVE HARDWARE. Go into ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS and remove all sound drivers and software you see. REBOOT. The system will now find the "new" sound card and do a new install. Try giving it the latest drivers you can find first.
Breaking up audio is also sometimes due to resource conflicts. In device manager open the properties window for the sound card and generally bugger around trying to change the resource allocations (IRQs etc.) and rebooting - this sometimes works.
If this doesn't help, you need to find and install legacy drivers, one after another, for that sound card. Also try identifying what chip set the sound card is, and going to the manufacturer of the card and looking for old drivers.
