Most likely the spring you are looking for is located on the torque converter. if you remove the plastic housing, the lower disc that is attached to the engine by the belt (not the chain) there should be a spring on the outside of it. hope this helped.

How to rebuild a 17hp briggs & strattion motor

Get the date code and model off the rewind cover, Jacks small engines sells kits complete along with others. If you are a hobbyist go for it but in the long run is it a greater value to purchase a short block instead.

I have a mtd 5hp. briggs@strattion engine its not getting any gas,Ihave put a new diaphram in it and it is still not getting gas, I can pour gas in the carb. and it will run untill it runs it out.

Check the screw on the bottom of the bowl, it has little orifices on it and they need to be cleared. What kind of diaphragm did you replace and where was it located????? Pouring fuel it the carb is not a solution to problems like this I do not recommend that you do that! Your problem is just a clog somewhere you have to find it, this very common problem. This is how us repairmen make good $$$ off of people in your position. This stuff is not ROCKET science! Good Luck...
