This is a lense drive problem.
And may require the WHAP method to correct :D

The tolerances between the motorized lense and the camera body are so tight, that any graing of sand, lind, and even hair can cause binding in the mechanism.
Next time you turn it in.... give it a few WHAPs in the palm of your hand in an attempt to dislodge the offending particle. Even gently rock the lense back and forth to try and free it up.

If your camera still will not extend the lense, you will need to take it in and have it professionally cleaned. If there are any internal gears, sensors, relays damaged - they can repair it at that time.

A cleaning is around $35, and well worth it.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

that means - go turn it on... and smack it firmly.

The lense drive error is just that - the sensor is expecting a lense to extend or retract, and its not getting there - so it goes into self-preservation mode and shuts down before more damage is done.

Turn it on, jiggle the lense lightly, and hit it in your had a few times to try and dislodge it.

Aside from this - there is nothing that you can do. Cameras have over 50 parts in the lense alone.

If you dont know what each does or where it goes - you will have a brick in no time.

Have it cleaned and checked out at a camera shop where they are experienced in disassembly and re-assembly.

There is no end-user fix for this problem. Resetting the camera will do nothing. That only resets the EEPROM.

    Thanks :D

    Any independant camera shop.

Canon will also refer you to an authorized canon repair facility (usually the same kind of shop).

Lens error, restart camera This happens on my Powershot A470; when I restart the camera the same thing keeps showing up I have searched for solutions and one solution was hit a reset button--never found...

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

try these:-
  • connect it to pc and on it
  • vaccum the barrel of lens
  • changing mem. card and batt. for 2min.
  • shake it.
  • on and off in different positions
  • hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

Where do i find the serial nb

On the bottom of the camera, just below the lens, there's a sticker. The sticker starts with Canon PC1267, the next line reads DC 3.15V, and the line directly below that is the serial number.
