Question about HTC G1
The G1's back comes off. At the top end of the phone (away from the charger port), with the keyboard open, there's a tab where the back latches to the body. You have to open the keyboard to get to it. With the keyboard open, you can push that little tab outward to release the catch. On mine, the back makes a distinct click at that point and separates from the body along about half its length. To get it off the rest of the way, pry gently and it will come free.
Once the back is off, you can see the battery compartment. The SIM card slot is at the bottom of the battery area; you don't need to take it out to replace the battery. If the battery is in the phone, you can lift the top end of it out of the phone by lifting at the little recess at the top end. To put the battery in, slide it into the battery well with the contacts (three little brass strips) meeting the corresponding contacts at the bottom of the battery well.
Then, you can replace the back by hooking it on at the charger-port end and snapping the upper part of the back onto the body.
