I have the exact same problem. If you change the channel the picture will come back on as well. Please let me know if you find a solution!

i have a similiar problem. mine also shuts off when it gets to bright. i have noticed that if i turn down the brightness it helps but also makes normal things very hard to see. i also notice a strobing affect dureing the bright scenes, as in the screen shrinks and swells back up again rapidly. coupled with the left and right sides are cut off, as though it is playing in wide screen. i have checked all the settings i know how to and need LOTS of assistance. :)

Older 52 inch tv magnavox where screen is too bright or how to repair it

There two possible things based on your description.

Go to a channel that is in black and white and examine the picture--is it black and white or yellow?

These sets do have screen controls that can be adjusted but they rarely need it.

If the picture is yellow looking it could be interpreted as too bright.

If good black and white picture---stand back ten feet when you examine it---I can tell you how to adjust the sceen controls, not real easy but can be done with someone to watch screen.

I am here to help you and I have over 30 years experience with all kinds of TV sets.

Is black and white picture somewhat YELLOW LOOKING?

iF THIS INFORMATION TOLD YOU SOMETHING YOU DID NOT know rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Tv picture shrinks

This is a common problem on certain models of Philips Magnavox TV sets. The most common symptom is the screen will shrink and expand over and over. After the TV heats up for a while the video will work like normal. After a few weeks or months your TV will eventually stop working and not have video. You can get complete parts and instructions from

the fact that you can still see the line when the tv is off is because you have been watching with the line and it has burnt into the crt.

On the CRT circuit board(picture tube), you will find R3340, which is a 10 ohm 1/3w resistor. The location of the resistor is printed on the bottom of the ckt board. It is burned open, replace with a 10 ohm 1/2w resistor. This will solve your problem. The original resistor was sized too small, should have been a 1/2 watt. This resistor is mounted standing up on ends. Mount the replacement resistor the same way. Be careful and don't get the circuit trace too hot and damage the circuit trace. (it's very small) The resistor is located on the crt(cathode ray tube), pcb(printed circuit board) socket. The resistor supplies apx +200v to the collectors of the r, g, b, video driver transistors. If this voltage is low, it causes excess brightness(excess beam current), causing the set to "shut-down". If the shut-down is too quick, you will NOT see the excess brightness, because the picture tube has not warmed-up enough to display anything on the picture tube. To see if the set displays "excess brightness", you will need to turn the set "on" about 5 to 10 times. This will heat the picture tube enough to display "excess brightness", IF that is the PROBLEM. Of course, there are OTHER defects that will cause a tv to shut down. There are built in safety circuits, that will "activate" if excess voltage/current or heat is detected anywhere in the set.

My resistors are not numbered the same on my crt board APT187. GSM 02/20/2008

21PT3324/71 Philips TV wont stay on

Try this: On the flyback transformer, raise the SCREEN voltage. There are 2 controld on the flyback - the top one is FOCUS and the bottom one is SCREEN. As the tube ages its emission decreases, and the computer monitors the tube's emission. When the emission gets to be too low, the computer shuts the set down. This is exactly like IK blanking in Sony sets, except Sony blanks the video and Philips shuts the set off. To set the screen voltage properly, turn the brightness and contrast to 0, raise the screen voltage until you see the white retrace lines in the picture, and then back down on the screen voltage until just past the point where the retrace lines are gone. Reset your brightness and contrast and the set should play fine.
