The blades on our 48" mtghs walker mower turn but not fast enough to cut the lawn. Mower is 5 yrs old.

    Joe,
    Thanks for the reply.

    1) "..bolts holding blade are tights" - yep, good to go there...retightened them with a air wrench. But what I did notice here is that the shaft itself can be turned by hand which is not how it was. Every week I would take off the blades and sharpen them and put them back on and the shaft always prevented the air wrench from turning the blades

    2) "..belt too old" - not sure about that. The power to the blades is direct from the engine after I engage the blades.

    3) "belt tensioner wheel and spring are worn" - not sure about how to tell that

    4) "slowly when the deck..." - nope...when the blades are engaged the mower travels at its expected speed.

    Thoughts?
    Thanks
    Kevin

How old is the belt? Belts on Lawnmowers don't tend to last too long. I'd bet a new belt is what you need as that is the most common thing, even if the belt looks good, they stretch and so will slip more on the pulleys with the blades and so will not turn fast enough for a fast cut. A new belt is relatively cheap and can be bought from the local lawnmower dealer.

There are a couple of possible causes for your problem.

first of all, check to be sure that the large nut holding each blade in place is tight. If it is not, use a piece of a 2x4 to hold the blade and a wrench to tighten each bolt. While you are under the deck examine the blades to be sure that they are fairly sharp and not in need of a good sharpening as dull blades can make you think the blades are not cutting.

The second cause could be that the belt is old and stretched. So what is happening is that the belt is slipping every time there is resistance. To remedy this install a new belt.

The third problem could be that the belt tensioner wheel and spring are worn. If that is the case replace them.

Finally, if your mower only goes slowly when the deck is not cutting you probably have a partially blocked carbeurator. You can try to clean out the blockage with a carbeurator cleaner that you add to the gas, or have the carbeurator rebuilt.

Hi Kevin. Yes that loose shaft is a concern. I believe you may need a new engine. Sorry to be the messenger of that news. good luck.

Polan selfpropeled mower the blade is not spinning fast enough and hardly cuts the grass

Blade speed equals engine speed. Check your carburetor and fuel pipe
Make sure you sharpen the blade with - this is more important for a good cut.

Leaves uneven grass behind mower

Do you mean it is cutting the grass lower on one side. If that is what its doing there is several things that will need to be checked starting with the blades first. Remove the blades and inspect, making sure you have not maybe bent one. If blades are OK, Next I would check and make sure the blades are installed or seated properly. Some have a spacer, if yours have spacers make sure they are on both sides While doing this you can also check the spindles for play in the bearings. They should turn freely with no up/down play. If this doesn't help there are other things it could be however this is my best guess. 30+yrs working on mowers.

WHY IS CUT UN EVEN? MOWER LEAVES LINES IN LAWN

My 10 steps to ensure even cutting for any riding mower.
1. The rear tires must be the same diameter i.e. same tread type and the same amount of pressure
2. Level the deck following the instructions in the manual
3. Make sure the blades are not damaged or bent.
4. Make sure the deck nor its attachments are bent
5. keep the blades sharp and don't drive too fast when mowing.
6. Over lap rows about 20%
7. Cut the grass at intervals that ensures you never cut more than 1/3rd the total length of the grass.
9. Make sure the underside of the deck is free from chunks of clippings.
10. Use a blade with higher lift, yes you have to match the blades to the type of grass you cut most often, (commercial mowers use a universal blade and high speed decks).

Leaving streaks of grass in middle of mower

Your forward speed may be too fast for the mower blades to cut every blade of grass. It may be new, but check the deck to see if there are any dents pushing the quill assemblies up making the deck cut uneven. Or it may have the wrong blades on it.
I have seen this problem in the past with a Gravely mower. The person was trying to cut grass to fast. He sold the unit and the new onwer did not noticed any the problems the old owner described.

Craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps
