Question about Kwikset Sheridan Handle Set

1 Answer

Door knob will not stay set. Keeps slipping out.

The kwikset hancock grade 2 privacy lockset door knob on my door falls off now. I reset it but it does not stay locked. When I turn it clockwise it slips out again. Can't seem to figure out how to lock it so it stays on when the knob is turned. Suggestions?

It worked fine for a couple of years but now it comes off and can't seem to get it to stay on. I don't have the original instructions and I'm not finding them on the internet. Thanx.

Kwikset lockset does not lock

The shaft for the lock fits in the knob. The lock on the knob might be 90 or 180 degrees out of rotation. Please remove the know and twist the lock 1/4 turn and put it back together. Also you may need to reset the location with a key and when the lock knob is off, turn the lock set with the key, then turn it and replace the knob.

Replacing door knob need short backset

There are locks with short backsets, but Kwikset doesn't make them. If your door has such a narrow stile that you cannot put a household duty lock into it, you are probably not interested in security, so anything you can find will do the job. Look online for locks for French windows or patio doors.

If you are interested in security, then check out Adams Rite locks, which are used in narrow stile aluminum storefront doors, but they also make some for wood doors.

If you are replacing a very old lock and your style is big enough for a 2-3/8" backset lock, then do it right and treat it like a new installation. Use a jig that can hold the hole saw in the right place, use a router to cut away trim that will get in the way of the lock, and install a modern lockset.

Our Qwikset Powebolt system is not working properly. I can lock the door from the inside and someone on the outside only has to press the lock key and it opens! How do we resolve this issue?

I think that you lockset is not set up for the proper "handing" of the door; that is, are the hinges on the left or right as you face the door from the outside. Although is see on the Kwikset website that the Powerbolt can be changed, I did not find out how to do it. I suggest that you call their Customer Service and they should be able to explain how to change it over. Here's the link:

I am replacing my door knob and replacing it with similar lock door knob by Kwikset. I measured from the end of the door to the middle of the hole where the knob goes into which is 2 3/8". The problem...

Most kwikset locksets will work on either 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inch setback. There should be two holes on the latch where door knobs fit thru the door. If yours does not have this option I would suggest that you get one that will match your setback.Hope this helps.Thanks.

Hi i have a weiser GA331P privacy door knob set in my bathroom door, and i have noticed that it can be pushed in and in the locked postion and when the door shuts it stays locked. I am concerned thay...

the weiser set should have a tiny hole in the knob or rosette around the knob. A paperclip or such can be pushed into the hole to unlock the door. That is the primary difference between a privacy lock and a security lock. Farmerbear at FixYa

How to install kwikset door knob with lock

Are the holes in the door? Are you replacing the old lock? Need to know these things, or I will be typing a bunch of stuff you don't need. Most doors come pre-bored. If not, you need 2 bits, One is 2 1/8 inch cup bit, the forstner type is a lot more expensive, and a 1 inch paddle bit, again, the forstner bit is expensive. Measure up the door app 39 inches, unless there is a lock rail on/in the door, then measure to the center of that. Then on the inside of the door, measure back 2 3/8, most locksets now are adj for 2 3/8 or 2 3/4, you can use either one. You can drill either hole first, To drill your one inch hole in the edge of the door sighting along both sides of the door with your eyes crossed so you can make sure you are going straight, you don't want to bust through the side of the door. Then get the big bit out and drill from the mark till you just come through the other side, then back it out and drill from the other side so you don't tear out the hole. Your 1 inch hole should be all the way into the big hole. Then get you chisels, the sharp ones, put the plunger in the one inch hole, nice and straight, then mark the outside with a sharp pencil, cut the line with the chisel then cut out the waste about 1/8 to 3/16 deep, make sure it fits nice and tight, Predrill the two screw holes, or you will split the door.Get the lockset out, the key to the outside, and the button on the inside of what you are locking. Line up the holes, you might have to spin the button to get them to line up, then put in the 2 long screws. Mark the jamb with the striker, To get it right, put the striker on the door, hooked into the latch, mark the edge of the door with a pencil, then put the striker on the jamb, backwards, to the line you just marked, then out line it, use your 1 inch bit to hog out the middle nice and neat, cut the rest out the same way with the chisels, predrill the holes, you should be all set. OH the deadbolt? You didn't mention that, it goes the same way as the lockset, only the hole is smaller, 1 1/2, I think, you will have to check that. Now you know why people call carpenters.

My knob has fallen off

sounds like the lockset has come apart in a way that it was not intended... normally you need to push a small spring loaded pin on the knob shaft in to remobe the knob, then a finished trim plate snaps off revealing the plate that gets tightened down to the face of the door... after tightening you snap the trim plate back on then the knob snaps on while pushing the pin in...

if it's a standard bedroom unkeyed lock then the plate and knob are one piece and the screws are exposed thru 2 holes on the inside knob...
