Question about Sony KP-46WT500 46" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

My Sony widescreen television has had green curvy lines for one year or so. Recently, the color is mostly green when watching TV. Every now and then, it will go back to the normal color, then back to green. Can I fix the problem myself with just a bulb? A service call is $85 just for a repairman to come out to look at it.

Hello mrsb422,

This sounds like a convergence problem and it is a little more complex then just a lamp. You will have to replace not only the convergence amplifiers but also the biasing resistors. This will require de-soldering and soldering of of components and there is a chance of damaging the circuit board is you are not careful. So I suggest that you have a TV repair technician examine and repair this set.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Sony 51'' projection Tv after one hour color chngs to Green

I've come into this problem before, it sounds like the lamp is dieing .. It could also be that a wire connected to the lamp is attached to the wrong post or isn't connected at all.
Depends on how long you've had that lamp installed and use time. If you've been using it for quite some time, 2.5/4 years and never replaced the lamp then it's most likely the lamp that needs to be changed, otherwise if you've had the lamp changed recently, i'd be leaning towards, a wire in the wrong place or not attached at all. Best of luck :)

Sony carry spares for 15 years. The question is, do you want to keep it, or buy a nice new LCD widescreen one .

You have pretty much narrowed it down to being a bad optical block. This isn;t good news, since the optical block is probably the most expensive part in the set. Your best bet is to contact Sony customer support to see if the will allow some kind of accommodation for the repairs. Sorry for the bad new; hope it doesn't effect the rating you give me for the solution. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the CRT (Picture Tube) is reaching its very end. Your set is not feasible to service even if the CRT would still be available from Sony or any jobbers.

I would be seriously shopping for a new TV set!

Thin curved lines in sony widescreen

Those sound like what is called "scan lines" and are the result of the way the picture is "drawn" on the face of the screen. Something in the set is allowing too much drive to the screen, as these are usually suppressed during normal operation...accordianman
