My xbox 360 keeps on freezing, but it can play dvds with out one single error. ive called microsoft many times and they do thier little tests over the phone (like cooler area, new game, all their ********) and nothing fixes it. i dont understand. could it be i need to clean my disk drive? please reply only if you know. i dont really want guesses. thx.
Playing dvd's fine but freezing on games and other things signifies to me a problem with the lead free solder. The main difference is that the dvd movie playback can run on CPU power alone but when you put a game in the GPU starts working and this is where the problems start.
When the Xbox 360 overheats it causes the lead free solder to crack, the more that crack the worse the machine will get. So eventually i suspect your machine will die completely and show either 3rrod or e74.
To remedy this you need to strip the console down and replace whats called the X-Clamps, at the same time replace the heatsink paste and then you need to re-heat the whole board. We use a special IR over which re-bakes everything and re-seats the solder properly, a lot of people use a heatgun but you have to be very careful.
Another possibility is the laser might be on its way out and plays only certain things, its a process of ilimination really and i will try cleaning the laser and adjusting the pots (email me if you need a guide for this) and see if that helps.
