You must have a failure of one of your defrost componants. it could be defrost control(timer) or defrost thermostat or heater. if you have a multi meter you can check the heater for an open circuit..if not..this is where you need a technician. the defrost thermostats go out alot, but no sense in buying parts you don't need. its one of the three...

The defrost circuit is not working, there are usually 3 things that normally go bad, defrost timer, defrost heater, and thermal switch. Would have serviceman check it out as cooling fins on coils will cut you like a razor.

The coils in the freezer department keep icing up completely. I manually defrost and then it works for a time (a couple of months) until the coils freeze again.

the defrost heater or thermostat located on the evaporator coil thats icing up isnt defrosting due to a bad heater or thermostat,or it can be the defrost timer that powers these other 2 parts

The freezer isn't cool enough and the refrigerator temperature goes up when we put stuffs.

I would first look under the ice box for signs of air restrictions. Clean out the bottom and make sure the fan and compressor is working. Inside the ice box listen to see if the fan is running in there. If that is fine I would look for signs of frost on the back wall of the freezer. If frost is present then ice is on the coils and you have a defrost problem. Their are 2 basic circuits in an ice box. Compressor run AND Defrost run. Compressor run circuit is anywhere from 8 to 12 hours depending on manufacturer. Defrost is 21 minutes. On new fangled electronic ice boxs the brain decides when defrost is needed using inputs from sensors, compressor run time, and how many times the ice box is opened and closed. But the new fangled ice boxs still have a defrost heater and thermostat like any ice box with automatic defrost has. Why do we need a thermostat? The heater is very powerful. It could easily destroy the ice box. It takes only moments to elevate the crawlspace inside the evaporation compartment to 50 degrees F. This keeps any frost that could turn into air flow blocking ice at bay.
Remember the defrost time is 21 minutes. If that heater was left on for 21 minutes it would not be purty. The termination thermostat is recommended to be replaced if it goes bad or whenever the heater is replaced. I say replace all 3 things in the circuit and be done with it. But who these days can afford that? If you suspect a defrost problem just unplug the ice box for a day or 2. If the ice box goes back to performing ok then you can suspect you indeed have a defrost problem.

Appears to go into an extended defrost cycle.

Sounds like your freezer has a bad defrost thermostat ( bimetal ) or bad #4 and/or #5 thermistor . This bimetal , has a high temp rating of 140 degrees , which means , when it gets to 140 behind the panel , it will cut off the defrost heater , to keep ice and food from thawing . The thermistors , tell the main control board the temps , and it decides when to restart the cooling process . I would check the thermistors by the digital controls , in the test mode , or have a technician check them for you .

Kenmore Coldsport freezer drain repeated freezes

probably the easiest fix for this is install a drain probe to transfer heat from the defrost heater into the drain hole to prevent ice build up. take a peice of 10 or 12 guage solid copper wire and wrap one end around the defrost heater pretty tight and put the other end down in the drain line 2-4 inches.

Might be icy. First, fully defrost by either removing the rear panel and using a hair dryer (dangerous) or leave it off and open for two days. Check door gaskets and clean or repair. Clean condenser coils under the unit. Now, take off the back lower panel and find the compressor. Largest pipe is what we're interested in. Start unit. It will frost the pipe. After 5 minutes, frost should be replaced by ice, dry or wet...not frost. If still frosty, you need freon. Hard to know what the right price would be.

What else could it be? Thermostat, defrost timer. Try my stuff before going on.

Sort of sounds like the adaptive defrost board is bad and you are not going into a defrost cycle. Do you have ice build up on the lower interior freezer section? Are the vent slots full of frost/ice? Ideally, pull the freezer shelfs out and take the little aluminum panel off the interior back to look at the coils. Are they basically a block of ice and frost? The problem happens when the unit doesn't go into defrost cycle and the coils freeze up. That blocks the air flow in the freezer so you get frozen food at the bottom but soft stuff at the top. And the frige just can't get enough cool/cold air from the freezer section to cool anymore. Power surges or blackouts, etc. can just destroy the defrost circuit board. Without good air flow the unit is not going to cool properly.
