Your motherboard's BIOS needs to be upgraded. What is make & model of your motherboard so that I can help you get the proper BIOS update?

It is probably partitioned. Right click on "my computer" select "Manage" and then look at the disk manager. You will find that the rest of the drive is there, but un partitioned and un formatted.

Fitted a maxtor diamond max 120gb hard drive as slave ,t auto detects on the bios menu on start up ,but does not appear in my computer as a drive anyone know why please

If it is a "brand-new" drive, it needs to be "one-time" prepared for usage:

Click Start
Right-mouse click My Computer
Click Manage
Expand the Storage branch
Click Disk Management
Click Disk Management (local)
Click on the "unformatted" drive to create a partition, and to assign a drive-letter.

Yes, If your partition isn't being recognized than windows has no way of reading the information. thats why windows create partitions to determine the amount of space and data being used. it anything try to access it in my computer and see if you can. if you can its possible to get you info, i recommend ananother external to transfer the data to or if its not that much info put it on a flash drive

This looks like documentation from the time but it is not from a manufacturer's site.

It is possible to replace/transplant the circuit board. But I am not sure of the motor and the platters. I would suggest you not to play around with the platters. If you wish to replace the circuit board (I guess it is also called the logic card) get a hdd of the same make and size and replace it with this one.
