You need to take the belt off the pully, then take the drum out. then you have access to the bearings in the back and it's pretty easy from there. if you need help getting to the belt, you can email me at appliance800@yahoo.com

The back of dryer drum rubs on the gas diffuser lip

You did get the right replacement bearing assembly; did you also replace the bearing retainer and ground strap to the gas diffuser?
I'm sure you followed the repair procedures as described in this video http://youtu.be/MPXu-Ya8CBY
And if you did double check everything I suggested- then the next thing I would have to ask, is the noise you are hearing only happening when the dryer is full of clothes or does it also occur when the drum is empty?
If the noise occurs only when the dryer has clothes in it, you may be overloading the dryer.
If the dryer is making the noise whether the drum is loaded or unloaded, then the next logical step is to check for level.
Place a carpenter's level on top of the dryer; check it side to side; and front to back; adjust the leveling legs if necessary.
From my experience, a scraping sound could be caused by metal or hard plastic objects getting caught between the cabinet and front seal of the drum. And you already had it apart to replace the front bearing and slides; and I'm sure you inspected the diffuser for any damage or being out of round when you installed the rear bearing...at this point, predicated you did replace the bearing retainer and ground strap- the only 3 things you didn't replace is the gas diffuser, the drum, and diffuser- not to suggest that you do :) Please keep me posted. Best regards.

Kenmore 86582800 drum has a high pitched squeak after been on for 5minutes. 1983 model

see this steps and fix it. God bless you

Drive Belt

If the dryer makes noise, the belt may be frayed or damaged. If the belt is damaged, it will make noise every time it travels around the pulleys. The drive belt is a long, narrow band that wraps around the entire drum, then around a tension pulley and the motor pulley.

Drum Roller

It is very common for dryer drum rollers to wear out. If the dryer makes noise, particularly a loud rumbling noise, one or more of the rollers may be worn out. After removing the drum from the dryer, inspect the rollers. If one is worn out replace all of them at the same time as a preventative measure.

Drum Roller Axle

Over time the drum roller axles can wear out, causing the rollers to wobble. If this happens the dryer makes noise. If the dryer is making a rumbling noise, check the rollers and axles. If any are worn out, replace them all at the same time.

Blower Wheel

Clumps of lint, socks, and other small articles of clothing can get past the lint filter and into the blower wheel. If the dryer makes noise, and the noise seems to be at a very fast pace, there might be something caught in the blower wheel. In addition, the blower wheel sleeve might be worn out, allowing the blower wheel to wobble on the motor shaft. If this happens, replace the blower wheel.

Drum Bearing

The drum bearing supports the rear of the dryer drum. If the dryer makes noise this bearing might be worn out. Replace the bearing if it is worn out. Do not lubricate the bearing, the lubrication will attract lint and dirt and accelerate the wearing process.

Drum Support Roller & Axle

It is very common for dryer drum rollers to wear out. If the dryer makes noise, particularly a loud rumbling noise, one or more of the rollers or axles may be worn out. After removing the drum from the dryer, inspect the rollers and axles. If one is worn out replace all of them at the same time as a preventative measure.

Drum Support Bearing

The drum support bearing is at the rear of the drum. If the dryer makes noise check this bearing. If it is worn out, replace the entire bearing.

Drum Slide, Glide, or Pad

The drum slides or glides support the front of the drum. As the drum rotates over the years, the glides wear out and then the dryer makes noise. Replace all of the glides as a set if they are worn out.

Drive Motor

Although not very common, if the dryer makes noise the drive motor may be worn out and the motor bearings can become noisy. If this happens the drive motor must be replaced. The bearings are permanently sealed and cannot be lubricated.

Is it dangerous to run a dryer that needs the rear bearing replaced? My dryer just began making the noise tonight. When I started it there was a loud pop then a grinding noise. However, when I removed...

Not dangerous, per se, but if the rear bearing has failed, instead just replacing the bearing sleeve you may have to replace the drum if it wears too much. You have metal and metal contact.

Whilst you have the dryer in bits, replace the front drum slides as well as they will be the next to go.

Dryer making a loud skreetching noise

Sounds like either a Frigidaire or model 417 kenmore. If it is the rear bearing has gone bad. Usually just the bearing cup needs replacing as long as you don't forget to use the proper grease.

Very likely the front support bearing is worn through and cracked there are also three drum slides that are positioned on the bearing which very likely worn to nothing and will need to be replaced as well. For model # NVLR333ET0WB replacement part numbers are:
FRONT BEARING: WE3X77
BEARING SLIDES: WE3X87

Good Luck to you.
