Question about Carrier Heating & Cooling

A friend, attempting to raise or lower temperature in my recently rented house pressed several buttons on my thermostat...Is there some manner in which I can reset the thermostat to it's prior settings ?...I find the instruction manual which was supplied to me to be incomprehensible...

If you cut power for two minutes, tripping the main circuit breaker, or the circuit breaker for the thermostat, you will have your unit reset to factory default settings.

Just cut down power for a couple of minutes, that will do the job.

Can't increase the heat on the thermostat


Instructions1 On nearly every Honeywell thermostat, the heat setting can be increased by simply pressing the HEAT option or AUTO and using the arrow keys to adjust the setting higher or lower until the desired temperature is reached.
2 To set an automatic heating schedule for Wake, Leave, Return and Sleep, press the SCHEDULE button, then EDIT.
3 Select the current day and use arrows to select the time and temperature for Wake. For example, if you typically awake for work at 6:00 a.m. and want the heat to come on, use that as your Wake time and adjust the temperature to suit.
4 Select the day and use arrows to select the time and temperature for Leave. Since you will be leaving the home empty for several hours, this setting will allow the thermostat to lower the heat until your arrival back home.
5 Select the day and use arrows to select the time and temperature for Return. This is the time and temperature that you will choose for returning home from work and may want the heat on to warm the house for your arrival.
6 Select the day and use arrows to select the time and temperature for Sleep. Set the time you normally go to bed. The thermostat will automatically adjust itself to your selected temperature at that time.

Want to know whats these codes mean [Engine rpn 704 rpm],[Map sensor 45 kpr], [cool ant temp 141f], [Dtc t caused rreezerrame p1281]. for a 2000 grand cherokee


Hi, the first part is data taken along with the code. The code P1281 indicates the engine is running cold (141 degrees--should be at least 190). Is your temp gage running lower than you are used to? If yes, it may be your thermostat has failed open. I have pasted below instructions for replacing the thermostat. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.


3.7L & 4.7L Engines WARNING Do not loosen radiator drain **** with system hot and pressurized. Serious burns from coolant can occur.


NOTE Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse. If thermostat is being replaced, be sure that replacement is specified thermostat for vehicle model and engine type.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  4. Remove splash shield.
  5. Remove lower radiator hose clamp and lower radiator hose at thermostat housing.
  6. Remove thermostat housing mounting bolts, thermostat housing and thermostat.

To install:
  1. Clean mating areas of timing chain cover and thermostat housing.
  2. Install thermostat (spring side down) into recessed machined groove on timing chain cover.
  3. Position thermostat housing on timing chain cover.
  4. Install two housing-to-timing chain cover bolts. Tighten bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    CAUTION Housing must be tightened evenly and thermostat must be centered into recessed groove in timing chain cover. If not, it may result in a cracked housing, damaged timing chain cover threads or coolant leaks.
  5. Install lower radiator hose on thermostat housing.
  6. Install splash shield.
  7. Lower vehicle.
  8. Fill cooling system.
  9. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
  10. Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks.


Removal & Installation, 4.0 liter engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If necessary, disconnect the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
  4. Remove the attaching bolts and lift the housing from the engine.

Remove the thermostat and gasket.
To install:
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces thoroughly.
  2. Place the thermostat in the housing with the spring inside the engine.
  3. Install a new gasket with a small amount of sealing compound applied to both sides.
  4. Install the water outlet and tighten the mounting bolts to 200 inch lbs. (23 Nm) on V-8 engines and 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) on non-8 cylinder engines.
  5. Install the upper radiator hose to the housing and tighten the hose clamp.
  6. Connect the coolant temperature sensor connector to the housing.
  7. Refill the cooling system.

Where do I set thermostat when temp is 10 degrees outside?


Setting a thermostat has nothing to do with outdoor temperature, but more to do with what is a comfortable setting for you and your utility bill.

A common misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace works harder than normal to warm the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, resulting in little or no savings. This misconception has been dispelled by years of research and numerous studies. The fuel required to reheat a building to a comfortable temperature is roughly equal to the fuel saved as the building drops to the lower temperature. You save fuel between the time that the temperature stabilizes at the lower level and the next time heat is needed. So, the longer your house remains at the lower temperature, the more energy you save.

Another misconception is that the higher you raise a thermostat, the more heat the furnace will put out, or that the house will warm up faster if the thermostat is raised higher. Furnaces put out the same amount of heat no matter how high the thermostat is set; the variable is how long it must stay on to reach the set temperature.

In the winter, significant savings can be obtained by manually or automatically reducing your thermostat's temperature setting for as little as four hours per day. These savings can be attributed to a building's heat loss in the winter, which depends greatly on the difference between the inside and outside temperatures. For example, if you set the temperature back on your thermostat for an entire night, your energy savings will be substantial. By turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours, you can save about 5 to 15 percent a year on your heating bill -- a savings of as much as 1 percent for each degree if the setback period is eight hours long.

2.7L Engine


  1. Disconnect negative cable.
    CAUTION Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove radiator lower hose from thermostat housing.
  4. Remove nuts from heater tube flange studs.
  5. Loosen starter bolt at heater tube bracket.
  6. Pull heater tube out of thermostat housing and position out of the way.
  7. Remove bolt and two studs.
  8. Remove thermostat housing, O-ring and thermostat.
  9. Remove thermostat housing bolts.

To install:
  1. Clean gasket sealing surfaces.
    NOTE Install thermostat with the bleed valve located at the 12 o'clock position, between tabs on seal.
  2. Install thermostat and seal into thermostat housing .
  3. If removed, install two studs.
  4. Install thermostat, thermostat housing and O-ring and bolt. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs.(12 Nm).
  5. Lubricate new heater return tube O-ring with coolant.
  6. Position heater return tube flange over two studs. Install nuts.
  7. Tighten retaining nuts to 53 inch lbs.(6 Nm).
  8. Tighten starter bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54.3 Nm).
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Install hose clamps.
  10. Refill cooling system.
  11. Inspect for leaks.
  12. Connect negative cable.


3.2L & 3.5L Engines


  1. Disconnect negative cable.
    CAUTION Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  4. Disconnect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  5. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from thermostat housing.
  6. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
  7. Remove housing, thermostat, and gasket.
    NOTE The OEM thermostat is staked in place at the factory. To ensure proper seating of replacement thermostat, carefully remove the bulged metal from the thermostat housing using a suitable hand held grinder. It is not necessary to restake the replacement thermostat into the thermostat housing.

To install:
  1. Position gasket on thermostat and housing.
  2. Install thermostat housing, gasket and mounting bolts onto block. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Install radiator hose.
  4. Install bypass hose.
  5. Connect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  6. Connect negative cable.
  7. Fill cooling system.
  8. Inspect for leaks.
  9. Lower vehicle on hoist.



The thermostat is operated by a wax filled chamber (pellet) which is sealed. When heated coolant reaches a predetermined temperature the wax pellet expands enough to overcome the closing spring and water pump pressure, which forces the valve to open. Coolant leakage into the pellet will cause a thermostat to fail open. Do not attempt to free up a thermostat with a screwdriver. Thermostat diagnostics is included in power train control module's (PCM) programming for on-board diagnosis. The malfunction indicator light (MIL) will illuminate and a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be set when an -open too soon- condition occurs. Do not change a thermostat for lack of heater performance or temperature gauge position, unless a DTC is present. For other probable causes,. Thermostat failing shut is the normal long term mode of failure, and normally, only on high mileage vehicles. The temperature gauge will indicate this.
The engine cooling thermostats are a wax pellet driven, reverse poppet choke type. The thermostats have an air bleed located in the thermostat flange. The air bleed allows internal trapped air during cooling system filling to be released. The thermostat on the 2.7L and 3.5L engines are located on the lower left side of engine, near the front. The thermostat on both engines are on the inlet side of the water pump.
The thermostat is designed to provide the fastest warm up possible by preventing leakage through it and to guarantee a minimum engine operating temperature of 88 to 93°C (192 to 199°F). The thermostat also will automatically reach wide open so it will not restrict flow to the radiator as temperature of the coolant rises in hot weather to around 104°C (220°F). Above this temperature the coolant temperature is controlled by the radiator, fan, and ambient temperature, not the thermostat.

Heat temperature issues with Goodman GMP 100-4 furnace


69,000 btuh is adequate for a 12-1400 square foot house.
Otherwise, your thermostat simply tells the furnace to cycle on/off.
If it calls for heat and does not come on, the problem is with switches and relays within the furnace.
Your setting the temp higher only causes the other parts to keep trying until they finally light and heat.
This is based on your information saying it will cycle on and blow cool air--not hot air.
You will have several temperature variations from floor to ceiling.
You probably have ceiling vents as well.
You need a technician to verify the rollout switches, fan relay, inducer fan etc. if the furnace is not firing everytime you call for heat.
