Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Roper Model# RAS8333RQ4. It will fill up with water, but when it goes to agitate or spin, it makes a whirring noise like the engine is stuck. Is there anything that could bind or lock up? (aside from clothes which has been ruled out)

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. That "whirring" noise is a common symptom. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Will not spin loud noise

Need a full model #. Describe the noise; is it a banging, scraping, whirring, etc? Does it make the sound when it should be agitating and/or spinning? Has it run fine until this incedent?
Thanks.

Roper washing machine is not agitating. Makes a horrendous noise when supposed to be aggitating. No noise when filling with water.

Hello,

In addation to the agitation does it make the same noise in spin??
If yes it makes that same noise in spin the problem is going to be a broken motor coupler. I have written this tip about a broken motor coupler it will show ya how to take apart the washer and replace the coupler. http://www1.fixya.com/support/r10293994-whirlpool_made_washer_not_agatating

Not spinning or rinsing?

After the machine fills the next step is to agitate. By agitate I mean the wash portion. The plastic fin in the middle of the tub rotates back and forth. So, after the washer fills, if the machine does not agitate, but stops dead, you have a broken lid switch. When I say stops dead, I mean no noise whatsoever. If the machine makes noise you have other problems.

If the machine fills, agitates, and then stops dead, the problem is still the lid switch. The next step would be describing the noise so I can more accurately give a suggestion. Problems include but are not limited to: broken couplers, malfunctioning water pumps, and/or defective motors or transmissions. These are the vast majority of the problems, and the others need no mention.

With a model number I can give a part number of the lid switch, and or other problematic parts. Also, I can give you an average price of the parts. With this information you could order it yourself and save money :) The model numbers are located under the lid of the washer. Not physically on the lid, but right under it. Get eye level with the top of the washer and you will see it ;)

Roper washer RAX4232PQO doesn't agitate or spin

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is a common problem that usually occurs through normal wear and tear. Replacement couplers are more resilient and resist breaking much better. If the washer will fill, will not agitate or spin, but will still drain, these are the symptoms of a broken motor coupling. The accompanying noise of the motor engaging and a rattling/grinding sound is also a common symptom. This is a very simple and inexpensive repair. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The part number is included in the link I provided. You can purchase a replacement on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: Roper is manufactured by Whirlpool and uses Whirlpool parts, so these instructions will apply.

If it agitates, you probably need a new gearcase. If not, check the coupling between the gearcase and motor. Hope this helps!
