The dome light won't come on when the door opens but the bulbs work when I turn the lights on from inside the car.

Are you saying that the dome light doesn't work when opening the door? Or when using the dash dimmer control to activate it? Or both?
There is a position on the dimmer control of most vehicles to disable the dome light. Verify that you don't have it in that position. It is normally at the opposite end of the dimmer rotation from the position that turns the dome light on. If the light doesn't work from either the dimmer or the door switch, check the bulb. They do burn out. If you replace it, do not touch the glass of the new bulb directly when installing. They get very hot and the oils on your fingers will cause premature failure. If everything seems ok (dimmer/door switch/bulb), check for a blown fuse. Otherwise the problem is in the car wiring.

Could be the door faulty switch. When the door opens it completes the electrical circuit. Easy to change. Any parts house should have it. And of course check the bulb.

I know this sounds silly, but did you try replacing the bulb? If the bulb is OK, try re securing the screws of the assembly to the roof, this is where the light grounds to the vehicle, but replace the bulb first, even if it looks OK, or do a continuity test to the bulb, that will give you the answer. Locate the switch in the door jam and exercise it to try to make it worl.
Spray some lube in it.
Some models have the option to NOT turn on dome light when doors open..
Does it not work for all doors????

Do you have actual door lights???? Is the dome light not working? If its just the dome light not working, its probably the bulb...If none of the lights are working, Its the fuse....usually a 10 or 15 amp fuse.

Check the bulbs.

the door opens, it turns on the dome light, so the wire that goes from the door switch gets powered up and makes your dome light come on. if your door is closed, and you turn on the dome light, the same wire gets power and is actually sending power to your light bulb on the dash.
just ignore it , or get a diode and put it on the correct wire, and it wont allow the electricity to flow back towards the light bulb when you put the dome light on.

Check fuse 23, 27 and 33 inside the vehicle. Chances are you blew a fuse when the dome lamp shorted. The modules should be okay.
