Take the carb off and take it apart then clean it with some thing flamable so it burn off with the gas.

Hi, I also have a small garden tiller (not a Mantis) that experienced a similar problem. What I did was remove the carberator and completely cleaned it with standard spray carb. cleaner (this is available at ant auto parts store or Wal-Mart). After I cleaned and reinstalled the carb. it ran fine. This was two years ago and it has been running fine since. What I believe happened was the gas evaporated and the remaining residue from the gas "gunked" up the carb. Once it was removed, the problem was solved. If this does not work, take a look for any broken wires. Sometimes a rodent will make a meak out of a wire. This happened to one of my cars. Good Luck!

Tiller starts and runs for a few seconds only with choke on

Sounds like you have a dirty carburetor. Might be able to get it going with a dose of carburetor cleaning in the gas tank (Sea Foam is good), about a 1/4 cup is more than enough. You need to start and run it a couple times to work the cleaner in to the carb. Then, let it sit a day or so.

Other than this, remove carb and do a good cleaning with spray carb cleaner in all the jets. If there is a brass bolt on the bottom of the carb that holds the bowl on, it may very well have 1 or 3 itsy bitsy teeny tiny hole, almost invisible to the naked eye. They HAVE to be open. Did I mention that they are small???

The tiller has sat idle for several years

Remove carburetor clean very good, replace needle valve and carb gaskets. Drain fuel tank and wash it good making sure there is no trash or rust. Change the oil and making sure to not over fill.
This is the procedure I have used many times. Hope this will help

My tiller only starts when I pore gas into the carberator air inlet. Then it surges for a couple of seconds and cuts off

IF THE TILLER HAS BEEN SITTING A WHILE I WOULD CLEAN THE CARBERATOR SOUNDS LIKE GUM BUILD UP. I HAVE HAD LUCK WITH DRAINING ALL THE OLD GAS AND DUMPING CARB CLEANER IN THE TANK WITH GAS AND KEEP TRYING TO START SOME TIMES THE CLEANER WILL DO ITS NJOB AND CLEAN THE GUM OUT OF THE PORTS IN THE CARB

I could do carb and tank if you want.

Mantis tiller runs but bogs at full power then stalls

The problem is in your carburetor. Glaze can build up over the winter and cause this very problem. You can try a fuel additive which will clean the carburetor available at any auto parts store since it does run. However, if the problem continues the carburetor may have to be soaked in a cleaner for two hours and rebuilt

I cant get my tiller to rev up.

most problems are due do a fouled carb, because of old fuel most of the time, take the carb off and separate it from the tank and give it a good cleaning and replace with new gaskets and carb parts, use carb clean and air pressure to clean,

5 hp Briggs and stratton wont run on a MTD tiller.

I had the same problem a few years back. Check the rubber elbow coming from the gas tank to the carb, it's probably cracked and sucking air instead of fuel from the tank.
