Movies that are created for "Wide Screen" viewing show up in letterbox on your TV. If you go to a theatre you notice it is a big rectangle. To be able to fit all of the widescreen movie on a TV it has to make the height smaller.
Because many people want to see the "complete" Movie, the "Letterbox Format" came about. I do NOT know what the word "Letterbox" actually means, or how that term was chosen. To get the complete Rectangle into that Square, they discovered that they could shrink the entire rectangle to fit that square. Meaning, what used to take 2 inches on your screen, now may only take 1.75 inches. Now a problem arrose. When you shrink the WIDTH to fit your dinky Square of a TV, the HEIGHT also has to be shrunk along with it, or else you're stretching the image as if it was on silly-putty ("Compression"). When the image was shrunk to fit the TV Screen, they were left with a gap at the top and bottom of the screen. So they simply fill it in with "Black". I guess the only alternative was to leave it snowy.
I assume you have a wide screen tv? most TV show are broadcast in a square (4:3) format, on a wide screen television the screen is rectangular, so to fit the square picture on the rectangle screen you have to either crop the top and bottom, or stretch and distort the image. the only real solutions are either to watch everything in the 4:3 format (leaving the sides of your screen blank), or subscribe to HD which will broadcast most programs in a wide screen format with out distortion.
It is either the plasma panel itself or a connection problem, either way it will need to get serviced. Suggest you find receipt and phone Panasonic. Cheers.
Hello Depending how wide the line is their could be two possible causes.
I have two questions for you.
1. How wide is the line.
2. Does it run from top of screen to bottom of screen?
If the line is thin a single strait line then it is possible the PDP has gone Bad (Panel). (Screen). The screen will to be replaced.
If the line is at least 2 or more inches wide then its a buffer board which can be replaced. LG calls this board Hand insert Boards or display driver boards..
check for cold solder joints around the flyback transformer and a open pico type fuse very close to it. they are rectangle in shape and ususually the one in the middle of the three is the culprit. The problem is in the pincushion circuit
Sounds like you have the TV in the "close caption " mode (text), turn off. 2. Check batteries and the mode the remote is in; eg TV, VCR, Cable & ect. Good Luck, big IRISH.
make sure you do not have the automatic screen mode set to wide screen on tv menu .Also if you have cable box set to wide mode only then the tv will only display wide mode.
