Power in a hydraulic system is perceived as Pressure ! there for more power is more pressure , id use a pressure gauge plugged into a remote port , to test your pump . an 85 id bet sure has some wear to pump , pressure for that id suppose should be right about 1200 to 1500 psi at 1050 rpm , if its less than that you could have pump rebuilt or replaced
do ck all the simple things 1st , filter, belts, hoses ,leaks

Is the device that lowers or raises the loader a hydraulic piston type device, or more of a hydrostatic type device? Whining noises are not uncommon with hydrostatic devices...

Im sorry, I thought you said you changed the oil. My thought was that perhaps the hitch might have bled down during the oil change. That happens occasionally with the tractor I service at work.

SOURCE: How do I replace a hydraulic pump on a John deere
The pump is located in front of the engine.A coupler joins it to the front crank shaft pulley.
SOURCE: All hidraulics funtions are dead, no hydraulic power in machine.
first thing I would do is test the pump itself even if no wear is found you could have a GPM loss.
So you need to do a flow test on it to find otu how much the loss is and check it to the specs of that hydrolic pump first.
