First, with the computer "OFF" and the power disconnected and the battery out, try removing and re-installing the hard drive a couple of times. If this doesn't help, the hard drive may be dead and need replacement.

First see if the hdd led in you notebook is lit then restart windows. next, check the bios if your hdd is detected (to enter bios setup: while posting keep tapping on delete key until the bios setup screen appears). if hdd is not detected, switch off your notebook then remove the hdd from its panel then place it back again (resetting) if no go. try the power cycle (for advance user)

to power cycle: switch off your pc then unplug/remove the ac adapter, usb devices (e.g. printer, mp3, ipod, etc), battery, optical drive and network cable then press+hold power button for 10 seconds and return everything you remove then start your computer with the battery/ac adapter. this should work!

How do I unlock the Bios on an Acer ES-1 111M Laptop

To boot from a CD, DVD or USB device, make sure that the device has boot sequence priority over the hard drive.

BIOS Boot

BIOS (Basic Input Output Subsystem) is a programmable chip that controls how information is passed to various devices in the computer system. A typical method to access the BIOS settings screen is to press ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the boot sequence.
BIOS settings allow you to run a boot sequence from a floppy drive, a hard drive, a CD-ROM drive or an external device. You may configure the order that your computer searches these physical devices for the boot sequence.
The first device in the order list has the first boot priority. For example, to boot from a CD-ROM drive instead of a hard drive, place the CD-ROM drive ahead of the hard drive in priority.
Before you set boot priority for a USB device, plug the device into a USB port.
To specify the boot sequence:
  1. Start the computer and press ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the initial startup screen. Depending on the BIOS manufacturer, a menu may appear.
  2. Choose to enter BIOS setup. The BIOS setup utility page appears.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select the BOOT tab. System devices appear in order of priority.
  4. To give a CD or DVD drive boot sequence priority over the hard drive, move it to the first position in the list.
  5. To give a USB device boot sequence priority over the hard drive, do the following:
    • Move the hard drive device to the top of the boot sequence list.
    • Expand the hard drive device to display all hard drives.
    • Move the USB device to the top of the list of hard drives.
  6. Save and exit the BIOS setup utility.
  7. The computer will restart with the changed settings.

Boot Priority Options

Some computer manufacturers allow you to select the device that contains the boot sequence from a special device selection menu. The example below uses a Dell system board.
To set boot priority using a device selection menu:
  1. When the computer starts to boot up, after the manufacturer's ID screen, press F12 several times. The device selection menu appears.
  2. Use the up and down arrows to select CD-ROM or

Pxe e61 media test failure

Solution:
Put 'Hard Drive C:' before 'Network' in the boot order
(If the hard drive does not appear in the boot order, that's why the PXE network boot agents start)

Note : Check that the hard drive is seen in the BIOS setup
Cause:
PXE (pronounce Pixie) is an agent used to boot on to the network
It's using the DHCP protocol to localise a server where the image of the OS is located
In order to PXE boot press F12 at startup or configure the boot order in BIOS to display 'Network' before 'Hard Drive C:'
If, for any reason, the hard drive is not seen the computer will attempt to boot on the network controller.
That is caused by the hard drive is missing, unplugged or failed

Compaq cq 60 615dx hard drive problems

We need more information about your problem to properly diagnose it. Boot up your PC, then press F1 when you reach the boot screen. Under "Boot Devices" you should have a hard drive listed. If not, your hard drive needs to be replaced. If you do see the hard drive listed, you need to reinstall an operating system.

If you change the Boot Device startup order with the USB port as the first boot device then you can boot up with an USB hard drive or USB Flash device.
If your hard drive is the first boot device then your USB hard drive will not boot up first.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults? In doing so, it will force IDE re-detection and often resolve vague boot issues.

Windows XP Pro will not boot up after installing Goflex external hard drive. I have disabled Legacy USB and reset boot drive order to my drive as first.

Hi oysjerry,
I see that you are experiencing a no boot issue after you installed your Goflex external HDD. before doing the options below, you can try booting into windows but do no connect your external Hard Drive on the system.
  • Keep on tapping f12 upon powering the system to get into the Boot menu screen then select you hard drive in the machine then press enter to boot to it.
  • If it boots into you internal hard drive after doing the Boot menu option then you do the last option provided.
  • Try changing the BIOS setting, check the Boot sequence if boot to other devices is the first boot priority then change it to your internal hard drive in the machine.
this should fix you concern,
if still this does not boot into windows

PXE-E61 error

Your laptop is trying to boot using your network card. Go into the BIOS and turn off PXE boot under the network settings or change the boot order so that your hard drive boots before network boot. While in the BIOS check to see if you hard drive is present. Usually the hard drive boots first but if the drive is undetectable then it will try the next boot option so if the problem is not with boot order then its possible your hard drive is not being detected pointing to a possible damaged drive.

Can I install a hard drive with out caddy or run the machine from an external drivve?

Yes, you can.
Connect your hard drive and installed the operating system and drivers,
That's it,Connect the hard driver whenever you want to boot from that Hard Drive.and change the BIOS to boot from that hard drive in Hard drive boot priority.

Why not you considered booting from a USB Pen Drive. It's most flexible than booting from an external Hard Drive.

Here are fews link on how to make a USB bootable Windows.
