the evaporation pan is under the refrigerator, over the top of the compressor unit. Sometimes fungi or algae can grow in there causing a mildew smell. If you can get access to it you can pour a mixture of baking soda and water into the inner part of the pan to destroy the plant matter and remove smells. About 1 tsp in 1/2 cup of water should do it.
Alternatives: 1/2 cup water with 50 ml white vinegar, or 20 mls bleach should do it. Be sparing with the water - it has nowhere to go but the floor after it overflows the evaporation tray.
odors are caused by bacteria so you need to kill the bacterial action. start with a weak solution of bleach and warm water. I use about 2 tablespoons bleach to a quart of water. then rinse until all the bleach solution is removed. use paper towels to get every little bit of water out. next take a clean rag and put about a teaspoon of vanilla (real or artificial) on the rag. then rub all surfaces with the vanilla rag. Your sour odor will be replaced by the sweet smell of vanilla.
The drain pan may be accessible from the back. An equal portion of bleach and water should kill the smell. Make you wear gloves and use a fan to ventilate the area before and after using the bleach solution.
Mix 1/3 cup of bleach and 2/3 cup of water , and pour down drain tube (rear bottom in freezer section . Too much bleach and the smell of bleach would be circulated by the fan to the room , so be sure to add water .
you can also use bleach let it sit there for a couple of days so it will kill bacteria and odor the smell is all the meat and blood that drain down to the pan
Same problem and I was told to only use detergents with "HE" on the front of them for high energy. the soap without HE is too foamy and hence never truly drains out and causes a mildew smell. I also purchased something called "A" Fresh that I run in the washer every 6 weeks to keep the smell out. I got it at an appliance store for about $11.00 for 3 tablets
