Useing Hard drive on a Mac computer(Hard drive Isn't showing up on computer)

It could be that it's either not partitioned properly, or if you've used it before it might not have been ejected properly the last time it was disconnected.

Some drives that say they are Mac compatible must be partitioned for Mac before they become accessible. Based on the brief description that's the only advise I can offer at this time.

Once you try to access the drive from MAC, the windows partition would have got damaged...
The windows partition information would be lost...
so in order to access the HDD back in windows O/S, you need to reformat the drive...

Drives that are formatted for Mac o/s will not be able to access by Windows o/s and vice versa...

so try reformatting using the disk management tool utility available in computer management and try to access the drive...
It would help...!!!

you originally used/formatted it to the MAC. MAC will read windows drives, but windows will not read the data files due to the format used.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Can't get my Mac to fully boot up

your problem is probably on the hard drive. The chime sound is a file and as to be read on the hard drive.
Try this: reboot system with cmd+s hold. Then type fsck -y or fsck -f (too long to explain, one of those will work) .
the computer compute and says:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
type your fsck -y or -f again until the computer no longer says
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
after that, you type reboot, or shut down and power again.
If this does'nt work, change the hard drive (mac shop - expensive)

Firewire/usb drive no longer powers on

If the drive doesn't even attempt to spin up and appears to be completely dead then most likely it's the PCB which is dead. Just to confirm you can remove the drive from external enclosure and connect it directly to computer. If still doesn't power up then most likely the PCB is dead. You could try to get another hard drive of the same model and try to swap PCB. Not sure if it's gonna work though.
