Barbara,
Could be a couple of different things. You could have a broken belt, and the humming noise you here is the motor running. Another possibility is that something has gone wrong with the motor and it might be locked up some how. See if you can turn the drum by hand, reach inside and push on one of the baffles and see if you can turn it. If it moves very easily, I would guess broken belt, if it turns with some tension, your belt is probably okay and you would be looking at some type of motor issue more than likely. If you can barely turn it at all or not at all, your motor may have locked up for some reason and would need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

Open the dryer door and slowly rotate the dryer drum in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction. Rotate the drum 2-3 revolutions and then shut the door and see if it will start. If it continues to just hum and not start could indicate a voltage issue, motor issue or a friction issue. Open the door again and locate the door switch plunger in the upper or lower corner on the hinge side of the drum opening. Hold the plunger in while someone begins rotating the drum counterclockwise. While turning the drum counter clockwise and holding the door switch plunger inwards press the start button. If it starts, there is likely a friction problem or motor problem. What is the model number?
usually the humming sound is coming from the motor, try this, open the door, turn the drum with one hand and hold the door switch in with your other hand and have someone else push the start button at the same time, this might help the motor turn on but if it does you need a new motor,if you can't turn the drum you could have something stuck in the blower wheel or something jammed in the motor like a broken belt but like i said a humming sound is usually the motor.
Check to see if the drum will turn by hand. If so, leave the door open but push the light switch button down and start the unit. Once you hear the humming sound, manually turn the drum with your hand to start. If the drum turns normally, you have a bad motor and needs to be replaced. If the drum does not turn, something is jamming the motor and needs to be disassembled and inspected.
Good luck
the humming noise is from the motor, see if you can spin the drum by hand,if it moves you have a bad motor,if it's hard to turn you could have something stuck in the blower wheel or the belt is jammed somewhere, the blower wheel is behind the duct that the lint filter slides into
Yes, there is a "startup" switch. It's the button you push on the panel (but I'm sure you know about that).
This switch energizes the start winding in the motor -- when the motor gets up to speed, a centrifugal switch in the motor disconnects the power from the start winding and switches to the run winding.
Either the start winding is not getting power or the winding is bad. If "no power" is the problem, it could be the button on the panel or a loose/dirty connection between there and the start winding. Lot of possibilities which need to be explored.
But if you know about pushing the safety switch on the door and spinning the drum by hand to get the motor started, you can probably fix this.
