This is the best and only halfway decent diagram I could find. However, it's fairly intuitive when you look at the mower deck up close: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/showSubComp.pd?imageUrl=http%3a%2f%2fc.searspartsdirect.com%2flis_png%2fPLDM%2fP0102111-00010.png

Be aware you can go to searpartsdirect.com and find nice diagrams for even older stuff sold by Sears. You can zoom in and move on each individual diagram also.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
Here is the diagram:
One of the major problems on the LT 1000 is that the belt gets installed wrong side out. Just make sure the V of the belt rests in all of the mandrel and drive pulleys correctly.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Look under the "running boards" Sears(AYP) sometimes put them under there. If not, go to www3.sears.com, type in your 917.xxxxxx model number and the pictures will show you an exploded view of the belt configurations

there are several belt guards that you will need to loosen then the belt will slip right on. having someone hold the clutch will make it easier, and the belt diagram should be on the deck. If not, these are common mowers, so a search for this or a friends/neighbors mower may hold the answer. Be sure to re tighten all guards or your belt will pop off and wear out very fast against these metal parts

SOURCE: belt diagram for deck belt
From the pulley under the engine, take both sides an go straight back, between the two pulleys in the forward inside position, go past them and then out to the blade pulleys around the front of the pulleys and to the outside and then the back and then across the back. If you are looking down from above from the seat, "looking through the mower" you would see an inverted T shape.
I hope this helps get you going.
