Question about Panasonic PT-47WX53 47" Rear Projection HDTV

Convergence generator Was told today that the DCU/convergence generator was bad in my TV.  Was also told it would cost around $600 to fix with the board being $250.  I sent the tech on his way with no scheduled return.  I've been hunting far and wide for this part with no avail.  Anyone know where I can find this?  Or offer any recommendation.  Thanks

The picture is just extremely wavy. The Red gun was also turned up very high but the guy fixed that. My wife said that when the tech touched something in back then turned the TV back on that the wavy lines went away but then came back. I talked to him on the phone and he told me that I needed a new convergence generator.

My original problem was getting it off craigslist ;) I didn't pay much for the set but I'd really like to not spend $600 fixing the thing.

Red color is out of adjustment

The convergence circuit on these sets uses a digital correction signal sent through amplifiers (also known as convergence ICs) to electronically correct the convergence. If you can adjust the convergence with the remote and everything moves as it should then it is likely not the convergence ICs at fault. It is likely the digital convergence unit (DCU) that is not storing your setting. If you find one of the colors won't adjust or move properly to your satisfaction then it is likely one of the convergence ICs and possibly some resistors as well that need changing.
This is not really a DIY project.

Convergance Issue...

You can call in a shop or do it yourself. Average repair bill from a shop will range between 300 - 600. Average DIY cost will be 70.00

Your TV most likely has a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Its the digital convergence unit. If that goes out you will not have any control over the convergence. I have seen many times where the convergence ICs were suspected to be bad, and then after changing the ICs the set still wouldnt converge. the magic focus is controlled by the DCU often the magic focus will work only part way, then other times it will go farther then back to nothing. The DCU is usually suspect if more then 1 color is out.

Hi Mark, tough call without putting a scope to the circuit, either the convergence IC`s are going bad, signal from DCU is going bad (digital convergence unit), or possibly bad solder somewhere in the convergence circuit, I`m afraid your going to need a tv tech for that problem, BMW Rider
