Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Sears/Coleman central air conditioner p/n BRHS0481CB. The line contactor does not engage on it's own. If I manually engage it, the AC works great. I am not getting 24volts to the coil of the contactor. All the wires check good for continuity. I know the control board may be fualty, but is there anything else I can check before replacing the board?

Have you removed the board. there maybe a burnt trace that you can jumper with a wire. I have done this is the past.
I went tot sears and found your model with part numbers. the link is below

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=BRHS0481CB&productCategoryId=0904000&brandId=1804&modelName=HEAT-PUMP-BRHS-SERIES&diagramPageId=00001&documentId=10042856

alot of parts for this unit are discontinued by sears you maybe able to find online somewhere other than sears

hope this helps. I am sorry I can not be of more assistance but it seems you already have covered the basic troubleshooting that can be done on my side.

A/C unit won't come on. I have 230 and 24 volts to unit but contractor won't engage. What could problem be?

Check the 24 volt coil on the contactor for continuity between the 2 wires. I suspect the coil is open. If you have 42 volts ac at the base of the contactor and it ain't pulled in then it is shot. I wrote a tip on this and posted a couple of videos here How it works: Central AC Contactor

Hi, if you are energizing the contacts on the contactor, and the compressor runs, the thermostat is faulty. This is what energizes the contactor coil that you have. You need to check to see if you have voltage to the coil on the contactor. You need to replace the stat asap.

AC Compressor

Check your CONTACTOR - the black "block" where all the line wires connect. Sometimes they stick. It's a cheap part, although make sure you take a pic of the contactor with all the wires attached BEFORE you take the wires out to get a replacement.

Clicking sound is the contactor engaging to start the outside unit. Check for a burnt off wire at the contactor. For some reason you are not getting power to the outside unit. If you find a burnt off wire shut off all power to it then remake the connection at the point of the circuit break.

Compressor on central unit wont kick on

you need to use a meter to ensure that you are getting control voltage from the xfrmr. Also check it at the coil side of the contactor if you feel comfortable doing this but be careful of the line voltage side. If you are getting power on the coil side of the contactor usually a 24v signal from the tstat from the area labeled y and the contactor is not pulling in most likely you will need to replace the contactor. If the contactor is pulling in verify the amp draw on the compressor with the tag.
