But it is true. Most but not all prerecorded tapes use "macrovision" to stop you from copying. You have just been lucky so far.

I have recorded many of my old movies from VHS to DVD with this machine. But some will not record, as they as protected. Sometimes, though, if I just try enough times, over and over again, eventually a tape that would not record before will successfully record to DVD. It's hit and miss.

Dubbing from VCR to DVD+RW, get: "This program is not allowed to be recorded"

Its likely a copy guard which to my knowledge cannot be gotten around.

When I try dubbing from VCR to DVD the machine will only record about half of the VHS to the DVD. I get the following message...Recording Error - this program is not allowed to be recorded. The cause...

The DVD AGG (automatic gain control) is somehow being fooled into thinking the non-commercial tape has macrovision (copy protection). Is this a relatively inexpensive machine?

Dubbing vcr to dvd-

its the copy protection system doing this. if you have another dvd player or vcr, you can hook that up to a time base corrector box and run the output out of that to the dvd recorder, allows recording from any source.

You need to go into the set up menu and select recording options. On the recording options menu, scroll down to dubbing options. On the dubbing options menu select either VCR to DVD or DVD to VCR.
Recording and Dubbing are not the exactly the same thing. You use the record buttons to record TV directly to VCR/DVD you use the dubbing buttons and set up to record DVD to VCR or VCR to DVD.
Hope this helps.
