    try the instructions or installation guide. I know, if you're a guy, that's not a happy answer, but usually it works.

This sounds like an issue in the power settings, you can get to them through the display options (right click desktop, go to properties, look for power settings)

I have an Asus laptop Pro50G - the keyboard has numbers associated with certain letters e.g. J = 1 when using the function key. this morning after booting up, When I press these keys, instead of getting...

If there is a key on your keyboard that has the Fn key inside a lock icon, press Fn and that key and see if that unlocks the Fn key. You can also try pressing it normally, since your Fn key seems to have its own Fn-lock kind of setting.

If you dont have that kind of a key on your keyboard, this could be caused by an option in the BIOS. When booting up press the F2 key or whichever key your computer uses to open the BIOS. Once in the BIOS, look for an option that allows you to change the Fn key from a hotkey to something else, such as legacy.

I need to know what the keys f1-f12 keys usage.

The uses for the function (f1-f12) keys varies based on which program you have open at the time. Different programs use them for different things.

However, your computer also has some default uses for these keys when combined with pressing the fn (function) key.

fn + f1 locks computer

fn + f2 changes our power use profile

fn + f3 puts the computer to sleep

fn + f4 puts the computer into hibernation mode

fn + f5 changes the display/output mode

fn + f6 decreases the screen brightness

fn + f7 increases the screen brightness

fn + f8 enables/disables wireless connections

fn + f9 enables/disables the touch pad

fn + f10 turns the cursor overlay on/off

fn + f11 turns the numeric overlay on/off

fn + f12 turns scroll lock on/off

My screen on my laptop is broken. Can i plug a monitor into my laptop?

1) connect your external monitor to the laptop and then switch the monitor on
2) boot up the laptop
3) after it has successfully booted, you need to identify which function key toggles the external monitor on/off
4) you should be able to do this by holding down the Fn key and trying each of the F keys in turn, waiting a few seconds after pressing each one
5) begin by holding down "Fn" + "F3", "Fn" + "F4", "Fn" + "F5" etc.

If this doesn't work, it may be worth examining all the keys and look for a small monitor symbol on one of the keys. If you find this symbol, hold down the Fn key and then hit the corresponding key with the monitor symbol.

I have a dell inspiron 1564. To use the f1-f12 functions require me to first hit the FN button. How do I reverse this so that i can use f1-f12 by hitting them directly and have the current commands...

You can change it so you don't have to use the FN key by going into the settings while you computer is booting.

Reboot your computer
Keep hitting F2 until a greay and blue settings screen comes up
Choose the Advanced menu
Use your arrow keys to go down and select 'Function Key Behavior'
Hit enter
Select 'Function Key First'
Hit enter
Choose to Save and Exit (usually F10)

Should fix it up.

Boots up with function key locked. Can't type normally.

It sounds like your NumLock key is on. Try pressing the FN key and the NumLock keys at the same time. This should straighten things out.

Computer bios

Most systems today you can enter the BIOS with pressing F2 at boot. Some use F1, F10 or Del to enter setup (It should be on the screen at boot which key to enter setup) Once in BIOS navigate to the wireless device and see if it is Enabled

You can also look at the Function Keys, as most portables have a Fn + functin key combination to enable wireless (look for a radio tower Icon on a Fn Key, With Dell it is Fn+F2 not sure on HPs)

Function Key Issue

I'm wondering if you have a function lock key. Try turning on numlock and scrolllock while typing. Either that or you could use system restore and possibly the integrated diagnostics of the laptop to see if the issue is hardware or software related (hardware would show up in diagnostics) for you to contact Acer. Usually one goes to them by pressing and holding the Fn key (ironically) and pressing the power button, or by selecting it from a boot menu (by pressing F2, F8, f12, or whatever key it is on boot up.

I would suggest for the mean time, just taking the key off and holding it down using tape. Or you could press the key a few times if it's causing trouble, or press and hold it (if that is what causes the Fn lock, I'm sure it exists for a 'good' purpose but have never actually used it). I might experiment with this one :P. Definately sounds absolutely not like water damage :P

Hope this helps, stay spicy and happy lappying :)
