Question about HP (122226-001) Fan Controllers

2 Answers

I have a HP Media Center M370N 160GB HDD that I took to a computer repair shop. They replace the coolong fan with Delta Electronic Model Aso912L DC Bushless fan. I took it home and it worked for a couple of hours. Then when rebooted it gives the warning about the fan not working or it is too hot and computer shuts off automatically. When I brought it back to repair shop the guy told me that there is only one fan and not two fans so the one fan is not enough to cool the computer. So he "fooled" with the fan motor wires and it seemed to work ok....until I got it home and it worked for a number of minutes and then shut down. Is this the proper fan motor replacement....do I fix the computer or get another one...it is just used by the young kids (5/6 year olds) for simple games

Its actually looking at the RPM feedback of the fan . its a 3 wire fan , ground, +12 volts , and RPM to the motherboard. If the rpm is missing or slower than set in BIOS it will shut off the PC before it has a chnace to over heat. Make sure the case fan is correct type and plugged into the correct pins.

Sounds to me like you could have a couple of possible problems.

First and most importantly would be to make sure that your cpu fan is clean and running. This is the fan that is located on the large heat sink on the mother board. A lot of times, especially on older systems, this fan and heatsink will get covered with dust and almost always cause an overtemp fault. Usually blowing this out with electronics cleaner will rectify this but if it has been like that for a while you may need to replace the cpu fan. Most electronics stores will sell these fairly cheap.

Your other problem may be that you need to purchase another case fan to cool the cpu more effectively. Generally though most premade systems come with enough fans.

Also you may need a new fan for the one that he replaced. It sounds to me like you may have a bad connector either on the replacement fan or the power supply wire. A real easy way to tell is to wiggle the wires a little bit. If your fan speed fluctuates odds are you've got a loose connection. It can appear to be fine but sometimes those wires on the molex connectors come loose and make don't make good contact. When that happens it may work fine for a few minutes, but then the first time that you get vibrations it stops working.

Media center m370n keeps rebooting in loop wont start says KERNEL32.DLL was not found

Sounds like you have a boot error on the hard drive. Time to get out your rescue discs and reload Windows. When reloaded run CHKDSK/F to clear any errors. If you can run CHKDSK/F before having to format your hard drive, that may save you a lot of time.

Cooling fan replacement

Remove the fan from the heatsink and take it with you to a electronic hobby parts shop, they usually have a range of computer fans, select one that is the same size as your faulty fan.
You may need a new connector or cut the connector off the old fan and solder it onto the leads on the new fan. Make sure you insulate the soldered wires so that they don't short against each other.

Must hit f2 for computer to work

One of the fan monitors in the BIOS is detecting a problem with a fan.
This would be a good time to pull the cover off the computer and clean ALL the fans. either a fan is dead or struggling. any fan in your computer can be replaced for less than 40 dollars.
Keep in mind that of the fan is weak and goes out, it may take the cpu or a video card with it.

Ned to replace cpu fan.

I think that particular model has the fan mounted in the back of the case just below the power supply. It has a duct that goes from the fan to the processsor. Remove case cover and remove the duct by pressing the 2 tabs on the top of the duct and rolling it back and out. Unplug the fan cable from the mainboard . Make sure you remember the connector as you will have to plug the new fan cable back in. Remove the screws that hold the fan to the case and remove the old fan. Install the new fan, plug in the cable and if your computer is dusty on the inside blow it out with some canned air . Re-install duct by sliding tab at bottom in first then pull up to lock in top tabs. Replace case cover and she's done.
