Also, check for the actual mechanical shaft seal, they leak, and appears as if it's coming off of the wet end. Making it look like the drain plug could be leaking, or the area between the volute which is the pump housing, and the cover, this would normally be a failed gasket or O-ring, depending on the brand. Sometimes just tightening the cover to the pump housing correct this issue.
I agree with the drain plug although it will only leak when not running and you would have a lot of air in the system and it would be hard to prime the pump.
Another common issue on the bottom of the pump is that the volute which is the cover and area where the impeller could be cracked from over tightening the drain plug. So you might want to check that area for a crack. You may have to replace the volute if this is the case.
Some pumps have a drain plug located ay the bottom of the pump. if so turning off the pump. removing the plug. and wraping the plug with Teflon tape has worked for me before. or possibly the plug just needs to be tightend
