Hi,

I am assuming that you are very familiar with electronic circuitry and components, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. In the absence of a schematic diagram, and since you have perform initial voltage checks, perhaps you can wing it. Your "brick" will have to follow the basic design of an SMPS (switch mode power supply). Simply stated,an SMPS is an AC to DC to high freq AC then to lo V DC converter. Per your post, you have checked that there is DC (B+) from the AC mains, then what is needed is to check if there is oscillation to produce the high freq AC. Often design calls for an optical coupler, a small rectangular looking component with four pins, two at each end. This is nothing more than a LED and a Light Dependent transistor. Its function is to switch/trigger on the oscillation (and therefore start the SMPS producing the lo B+s).

Again, since there is no readily available schematic diagram, might I suggest that you post back the part numbers of the ICs and transistors. What we can do is pull out their spec/data sheets and/or application diagrams. Such would give us a general idea of the working voltages at what pins and what each component is supposed to do. Example, let us say your power supply uses a 817A/0635 opti coupler and/or an SG5841DZ controller IC, then we can search for them as initially described.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Fault finding


Power is going to the motherboard, and you know this by assuming?

An assumption would be you see the Power Supply fan spin, LED lights light up, and maybe computer case fans spin.

Not an assumption, and you would have tested the 3 main voltage power rails, coming out of the Power Supply.

The Power Supply in your computer is an SMPS.
Switched-Mode Power Supply. (Also is known as the short abbreviation - PSU. Power Supply Unit)

The Power Supply in your computer is a Converter.
It converts HIGH AC voltage into 3 LOW DC voltages.

[Depending on country,
USA = 120 Volts AC. UK = 240 Volts AC. Japan is 100 Volts AC, but may depend on area. Australia = 240 Volts AC. India = 240 Volts AC. HOWEVER, do not write the above in stone. I may have made an error ]

The 3 low main DC Voltages coming out of the Power Supply is;
A) 3.3 Volts DC
B) 5 Volts DC
C) 12 Volts DC

Orange wires carry 3.3 Volts DC
Red wires carry 5 Volts DC
Yellow wires carry 12 Volts DC
ALL Black wires are Ground wires. They can also be called Negative wires.
This is a DC circuit now. There is a Positive, and a Negative.
Orange, Red, and Yellow wires are power wires, and also Positive wires.

The first part of your diagnosis will be to test those 3 main voltage power rails.

[Digressing;
Using an example;
There are many Red wires coming out of the Power Supply.
These are 5 Volt wires. They are Connected TO, the 5 Volt power rail in the Power Supply.
ALL 5 Volt wires end in one place, in the Power Supply.
The 5 Volt power rail.
When you test just ONE red wire, you are testing the entire 5 Volt power rail coming from the Power Supply.

This also goes for the Orange wires, and Yellow wires ]

With the Red 5 Volt wires, and Yellow 12 Volt wires, you could just use a 4-pin Peripheral power cable to check them,

Multimeter set to DC Voltage, the red (Positive) probe lead of the multimeter; touches the female metal terminal connector, for the Red wire.

The black (Negative) probe lead of the multimeter, touches a female metal terminal connector, that goes to a Black wire.

You should be reading 5 Volts DC.

Same thing for the Yellow 12 Volt wire.

With an Orange 3.3 Volt wire, this changes.
A straightened out paperclip is inserted, down into the BACK of the ATX main power cable's connector; AND into a socket hole with an Orange wire in it.

The straightened out paperclip, slides down into the socket hole, with the Orange wire in it.
Slides down into the socket hole, RIGHT NEXT TO the orange insulation of the wire, and MUST go down far enough; to Touch that female metal terminal connector.

EVERY wire going down into the ATX main power cable's connector, ends in a female metal terminal connector.

Same thing is down with a socket hole that has a Black wire in it.
ALL Black wires are Ground wires. (Negative)
You can choose ANY socket hole that has a Black wire in it.

Now touch the two probe leads of the multimeter, to their respective straightened out paperclips.

Red (Positive) probe lead of multimeter, to straightened out paperclip in Orange wire socket hole.
Black (Negative) probe lead of multimeter, to straightened out paperclip in Back wire socket hole.

You should be reading 3.3 Volts DC.

(Or if your multimeter kit has special probe lead, that would take the place of a straightened out paperclip, of course use it instead)

Know this;
A) If ALL of the LED's ('lights') were on at once, they would use less than 1 Watt of power.

B) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.

C) A typical CPU (Processor) can use 51 to 130 Watts of power.
Just depends on what Processor (CPU) it is.

This is why a Power Supply with a weak voltage power rail, will not have enough power to turn the Processor ON, but will have enough power to light those simpy LED's, and spin fans.

From what I read;
1) One wire of the AC adapter (Charger) is hot to the touch.
'.....when I touch the charge one part of the wire is very hot."

2) AC adapter checks out as far as voltage is concerned.
"I tested the charger voltage and everything is ok."

3) "Sometimes when I touch the charge appear the icon...Could it be the charger broken wire?"

Does this mean, "Sometimes when I touch the AC adapter (Charger), the battery icon appears."?

Battery is CHARGING icon?

Could it be a broken wire in the power cable TO charger?

Uh, yeah.

1) AC adapter NOT plugged into the DC Power Jack, plug the power cable of the AC adapter into power.

Multimeter set to DC Voltage, and proper scale, red Positive lead to harness wire that goes to DC Power Jack's center pin;

,black Negative lead of multimeter, to wire that goes to DC Power jack's inside cylindrical metal shell;

Now gently wiggle the cable from the AC adapter, TO the DC Power Jack of the laptop.

Do you get an intermittent reading?

Have a lot of experience in desoldering/soldering?
What tools did you use?

25 Watt soldering iron?
.025 or .030 rosin core solder?

Desoldering Tool, or Desoldering Braid? (Solder Wick)
Side Cutters instead, and slightly shortened the wires of the DC Power Jack's harness?
(Then tinned the wires, and soldered the wires of the DC Power Jack harness, to DC Power Jack?)

Damp sponge, and cleaned the well tinned No.2 chisel tip, of the soldering iron, frequently? Used rosin solder flux?

Center pin wire (Positive), of harness cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the center pin of the DC Power Jack?

Negative wire of cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the inside shell of the DC Power Jack?
(Cylindrical shell, inside the DC Power Jack, that surrounds the center pin of the jack)

Sure there are no cold solder joints?

Not trying to 'browbeat' you, just am curious.

1) IF you are SURE you have the polarity correct, of the wires in the harness cable, that goes to the DC Power Jack;

,and you are SURE there is no broken wire, in the cable from the AC adapter (Charger) TO the DC Power Jack;

,and you are sure you made good solder joints;

I suspect the power correcting chipset on the motherboard, to be bad, or perhaps a Diode.

One example of the chipset I am referring to. This one is used in a lot of laptops. May not be used in yours, but gives you something to refer to when looking for a bad chipset, in the power stage, on your motherboard,

Usually when bad the top of the chipset will be blackened, or bubbled.
A Diode is a one way valve for electricity. When they go bad it is visually obvious.

Hello my laptop t41 power is not even flash but the adapter is working,am technician and i have troubleshoot allot.


I concur with what Diegotech stated.

To iterate further;

1) The DC Power Jack (DC IN), may have cracked solder joint/s on the motherboard connector, (Female), where the DC Power Jack plugs in.

Resolder

2) The DC Power Jack may be broken.
Center Pin mount, and/or body of DC Power Jack, and/or Outer Shell mount.

Replace DC Power Jack.

3) Wires from the DC Power jack plug to the female connector on the motherboard, may be bad.

Replace DC Power Jack.

Two examples, of a place to buy an IBM ThinkPad T41 DC Power Jack,

I want to convert this power supply for use with a battery charger for model aircraft. I need to know the color codes for the wires and also the pinout and which wire is the power on.

/PSON activated by pressing and releasing the power button while the power supply is in standby mode. Activating /PSON connects the power supply's /PSON input to ground, thereby switching the power supply to full-on condition.
18 AWG is recommended for all wires except pin 11, which should be 22 AWG. For 300W configurations 16 AWG is recommended.
There are several ATX variants.

Battery does not charge, but remains on with power supply connected. Female to male connection "touchy." Can turn off if cord is barely touched. Main concern being how to fix female part of power supply.


DC Jack diagnosis:
1. Test power adapter for output voltage. Bend the power cable in various directions while doing this to be sure that there is no broken conductors in the cable.
2. If power adapter is Ok, connect it & see if the power LED on the laptop will glow when you jiggle the power connector in various directions. If yes, then the DC jack might be loose or damaged, & need to be either re-soldered or replaced.
3. If not, then disassemble the laptop. Remove any components that attach to the laptop's motherboard first (e.g. battery, hard drive, RAM, wireless card, optical drive, ... etc.)
4. Next, remove the keyboard & the LCD screen.
5. Finally, unscrew all screws that hold the upper cover & lower cover together so that you could gain access to the motherboard.
6. Inspect the solder points connecting the DC jack to the motherboard. Make sure that none of them is loose. If any, re-solder them.
7. Inspect the center pin in the DC jack. Make sure that it is not broken or loose. If it is, then you might need to replace the DC jack.
8. When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.

On the main plug there is a single green wire. Jumper the green wire to any black groung wire in the plug and the fan will start and you will have output.

You have to remember that the voltages coming out of the power transformer are A.C. and the voltages used by the devices in the keyboard are D.C. Check for voltage rectifier I.C.s between the transformer and the rtest of the circuits. They should look like squares with 3 pins coming out of the bottom of them and metal backs that protrude above the top of the black squares. Use a volt ohm meter on direct current range and clip the black lead to a circuit ground such as a ground on an output jack. Touch each pin one at a time taking note of the voltage. If you find one that has the same voltage on all 3 pins it is probably shorted. I think the voltage should be about 12volts direct current positive or negative depending on the circuit. Each one will have a code that you can cross reference on the net to find the pinouts and specs. The same thing goes for all the I.C.s If you can find the pinouts for any that you suspect look for the power supply pins and check what the voltage is. Some will have two supplies, one negative and the other positive. If you find an I.C. with power at all pins or ones that should have no power only signal then it is likely shorted. Go slowly and don't bridge two pins at once by accident and you might be able to find the problem without the schematic or a service manual. There is a memory battery (CR2032) that power the memory that might be dead but that should only affect the programmed sounds not the LED or the amp chip. Hope this helps. Do not measure A.C. with the D.C. range or you'll burn out your meter. Use safety precautions with a live device.
