When you are about to save, instead of save, If you select "save as" and from there below the filename, if you click the drop down box "save as type"does it work for the 2003 type or any other type at all other than works?

How to save a word 2007 document to be compatible with Word 97-2003

If you want to save a document to be compatible to open in word 97-2003 you cannot simply automatically save the document because it will save as a .docx. Therefore you cannot click on the disk icon at the top to save your document.

1: Go to the at the top left corner
2: Choose Save As. Another menu will appear
3: Choose Word 97-2003 Document from the list
4: Choose where to save your file.
5: After the file has been saved as a .doc you can now just press save instead of save as. You can also press on the save symbol (a floppy disk) to automatically save the file now.
Yes you can but you must download a compatibility pack from Microsoft. This will enable you to open Word 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and more in your Office 2003 program. You can also download the free Open office program. It will open .docx files already. Go to the Microsoft website to download Word viewer
And you will also need Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

I have a 2007 student office program on my computer and my instructor is using the 97-2003 version of word processor and i can not open it to read what can i do?

The problem is with the format in which office 2007 saves its documents for eg in 2003 it saves as .doc extension and in 2007 it saves as docx extension. Any document typed on 2007 and saved as compatible mode for earlier version i.e. 2003 will be opened in 2003 but the same cannot be opened in 2007 if typed on 2003. Your solution is that either you will have to install office 97-2003 on your pc (it accepts both the packages) or your instructor will have to install 2007 on his pc.

I have an expired trial version of office 2007, and i now use open office instead of word but when i save the files and email people cant read the new document

If you save the files in an Open Office format compatible with Office 2007, people with Office 2003 or older won't be able to read them. Save your documents in an Office 2003 format and they should be able to read them...unless they have Office 98, in which case they should get into the 21st century and update to 2003!

If you are a Word 2003 user, but some of your colleagues are still using Word 2002 or even Word 97, you can share your documents with them as long as you save them in the standard Word document format. By having Word 2003 save your documents in this format, you can disable features not supported by the earlier versions and allow users to open your documents on their PCs.
If you don't want to do this every time you save a document, you can have Word automatically save your new documents in the correct format. Follow these steps:
  1. Go to Tools | Options.
  2. Click the Save tab.
  3. Under Default Format, click the drop-down arrow in the Save Word Files As box and select Word 97-2003 Document(*.doc).
  4. Click OK.
When you save your Word 2003 document, you will get a dialog box warning that some of the features that you used may not be available in the earlier versions. Click Yes to save it in the standard format that you'll share with the other users.
