Can I put a SATA laptop hard drive out of an ACER Aspire with a crashed mother board in an older ACER ASPIRE 9400 That has the 44 pin IDE I have the 44 pin to SATA adapter?.
The SATA HARD DRIVE WORKS FINE WITH A 2.5 SATA HARD DRIVE TO USB 3.0 ENCLOSURE WHEN THE USB IS PLUGGED INTO ANOTHER ACER NOTEBOOK.

AHCI is much smaller , faster and more compact size of circuitry embedded on motherboard. IDE is much bigger and older version of it. They are both specified for Hard drive and optical operation..

Remove the hard drive,go to local computer shop and buy a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter, put it on another computer to get your files. If it is SATA,just hook it to another computer that has open SATA connection. You might have to buy SATA data cable.
If it works on another computer then either the ide cable in the acer is bad/loose at either end or the ide controller on the motherboard is bad. I would try a known good ide cable first as if this is the problem it is fixable alot cheaper than a motherboard. Hope this helps.
With the exception of interface, laptop hard drives (2.5" drives) are easily interchangeable. You can look up the specs of the drive you pull by googling the manufacturer and model number, but the main specs are interface (sata or ide, yours is ide according to the info I found about this laptop- not interchangeable with sata), drive speed (yours probably 5400 rpm, faster ones are 7200), buffer size (usually 8 MB).
So, if you think the issue is your drive, check out something like: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1277&name=2.5-Hard-Drive
although Iwould probably go to a store personally instead of any kind of mail order. Take your old drive with you if you are not sure. You could even put in a bigger capacity drive; I believe your laptop came with only 80GB??.
