Replace the Power Supply yourself.
Isn't that big a deal, requires a Philips screwdriver, and some guidance.
1) Computer unplugged from power
2) Work on a table
3) Observe Anti-Static Precautions
Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer.
Relieve your body of Static
Before working on the computer.
Computer
unplugged from power, computer case open,
Touch the metal frame of the open computer case to relieve your body of Static.
Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be
Sure to touch the metal frame again upon your return.
Unplug all external cables to the computer. If you are not quite certain as to where the various cables go, make yourself a chart , and notes. {Note* Especially for speaker cables that hook into the back }
The Side Panel of the computer removes on the Right side, as you face the computer.
Looking at the back of the computer this Side Panel is now on the left.
At the Top edge, and a little to the Right, is a Philips head screw. Remove it.
On the Left side edge is another Philips screw, down towards the bottom under the raised 'Hump'.
The raised 'Hump' or protrusion is for your fingers. Hold onto the right side of the computer with your right hand, use your left hand to pull back on the Side Panel, with the 'Hump'.
The Side Panel will only pull back so far. (About an inch or two)
There are tabs coming from the Side Panel, which go into Notches in the computer case.
Slide the Side Panel back, then when it stops, lift it out, and up.
Set the Side Panel aside.
Now here is the Acer Aspire X1700 Service Guide, from Acer Support,
http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/manuals/acer/0000/servicemanuals/SG_ASX1700_VTX270_Book_1031.pdfSince you were involved with technical support, I'm sure you are quite familiar with PDF files.
If so, please disregard the following;
At the top of the PDF file is the Page Number box. It is to the right of the blue Down Arrow.
On the left side of the PDF file is the Bookmarks menu.
By default the Bookmarks menu is automatically open, once the PDF file is downloaded.
If it isn't one clicks on the Bookmenu icon to the left. (Page with a blue bookmark)
IF, you know the page number you wish to go to, you can use one of two methods to get to the page;
1) You can use the blue Down Arrow, and go page by page.
2) You can do this,
Put your mouse cursor in the Page Number box
Left-click once
Type the page number
Press the Enter key.
The actual page number shown on each page, does not correspond with the page number in the page number box.
For the following the reference is to the page number in the page number box, at the top of the PDF file.
Go to Page 48 (Actual page number is 40)
{Note* You may wish to decrease the view size.
Use the Zoom Out icon at the top of the PDF file. (Circle with - sign in it }
Looking at Page 48 you'll notice the following items to be removed listed in 1 through 7.
1) Remove the Side Panel - Check (Page 36)
2) Remove the Front Bezel - Check (Page 37)
3) Remove the Heat Sink Fan Assembly - Check (Page 38)
Access to the 24-pin ATX main power cable, and the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable,
http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atx12v4NOTE the Lock on the side of the male connector, that has the wires coming into it. The photo in the middle shows the Lock.
(Not a very good view. The 24-pin ATX main power cable connector has the same type of Lock. Better view of the Lock, and more info on this power cable in Number 5 below)
The Lock works on the same principle as a See-Saw on a playground. The top of the Lock is squeezed in, and this action brings the hooked end away from the Tab, on the female connector. (On the motherboard)
4) Remove the Processor - Stop - What? (Page 40)
Why in the world would you remove it? Just be careful, and don't bump it when removing the Power Supply.
I advise leaving the Processor installed.
The top of the Power Supply is tilted slightly away from the computer case, and then the back is lifted, tilting the Power Supply so it can be lifted up, and out.
5) Remove the Optical Drive. - Check - (Page 42)
So you have more access to remove the Power Supply case mounting screw, and more access to the 24-pin ATX main power cable.
http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atxmain206) Remove the Hard Disk Drive. Again, what?
It shows you can remove the Harddrive and Optical Drive in the caddy. (Metal frame)
Why was the Optical Drive listed separate?
7) Remove the HDD-ODD bracket.
HarDDrive and Optical Disk Drive bracket.
This is an example of one place to buy the Power Supply,
http://www.cdsparts.com/p-451-new-acer-aspire-x1200-x1300-x1700-x1800-x3200-x3300-x3810-power-supply.aspx
I saw cheaper units listed though.
If you have questions on any procedure in replacing the Power Supply, post in a Comment.
