Try cycling the power on the back of the console
are the lights blinking on your controller when you press them?

I have a similar problem, a guest was playing at the time so I don't know what happened before it broke but I found that you can turn it on with the eject button and off with the controller.
I still don't know how to fix it though. :(

Put your PS3 in Standby Mode. The first thing your going to want to know is your model number. It can be found on the back panel of the PS3 on the serial number label, and it will begin with CECH. Example - Serial: XXXXXXXXXXXX-CECHXXX -

For models: CECHA01, BO1, E01, E01MG, G01, H01, H01MG, K01, LO1, AND P01, it will have a power switch on the back. Flip it off then back on and you will have a solid red indicator light on the front.

For models: CECH-2001A and 2001B, press the power button on the front until the indicator light turns red. If all else fails unplug the power cord and plug it back

Time to enter Safe Mode. Press and hold your finger over the power button on the front until you hear three beeps and the indicator light goes back to red. Then release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds the third and final beep will sound then the indicator light will return to red.)

Press and hold your finger over the power button again until you hear a quick double beep. The release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds you will hear the double beep.)

You will then see this screen. "Connect the controller with the USB cable, then press the PS button".

Connect the USB cable to the USB port on the front of your PS3 and the top of your game controller, (between the left and right bumpers). Then Press the PS button in the center of the controller.

You will then see this screen. -REMINDER: -BY DOING THE FOLLOWING ALL OF YOUR DATA ON YOUR PS3 WILL BE LOST, YOUR ONLINE STATS ARE ON THE NETWORK SO YOU WILL GET THAT STUFF BACK, INCLUDING GAMES AND ADDONS YOU BOUGHT FROM THE PSN.-

Select option number 5. (Restore PS3 System). Then select yes to perform step. You will then see this screen. "The hard disk's file system is corrupt and will be restored.

The PS3 will then restart. You will see many different languages, all that is is saying is, "Connect the controller with the USB cable, then press the PS button". Press the PS button and set your settings when it finishes it will start up and its fixed!

Regards.

Tip

Fix the 80010514 error on your PS3

If your Play Station 3 (PS3) gets the 80010514 error somewhere, you can try this to resolve the problem:

1. Make sure that the power indicator on the Play Station 3 system is solid red. To do this, press and hold the power button until the PS3 beeps and the light blinks. Once the light has turned solid red, turn the power switch in the back off.

2. Turn the switch back on, then press and hold the power button.

3. Keep holding the power button even after you hear a short beep after 5 seconds.

4. After 10 seconds, you will hear another short beep and the system will shut down (release the button at this point).

5. Press and hold the power button again.

6. Continue holding the power button even after you hear a short beep after 5 seconds.

7. Release the button when two short beeps are emitted after 7 seconds.

8. As instructed by the on-screen message, plug in the controller and press the PS button

9. Select restore Play Station 3 system.

This should not affect any of your save games, demos, etc. but just to be safe you might want to back up to an external USB hard drive.

To backup saves, go to the Play Station 3 Save Data Utility, select the save you wish to copy and hit the Triangle button. Copy should come up as one of the options. If it does not then the save game is copyright protected and can’t be copied. If you can copy it, make sure you have a USB drive attached and copy it to that.

PS3 turned off because of a blackout, it is plugged to a battery backup aalong with the TV. The TV went off and came back on no problem but the PS3 won't turn on using the power button on the console or...

Sometimes when the Power goes off, the unit is left plugged in, & left ON, now, when the Power is restored, it may spike, or surge damage the unit, unfortunately. The "Inrush" current can be very high and this is what destroys the power Supply. generally. I suspect this is what has happened. I get clients that have this happen all the time, often they get me to write a report for their Insurance Company so they can make a claim, as this type of thing, at least in NZ is covered by that.
