Question about GE Nautilus 24" Built-in Dishwasher

GE nautilus wont run

When you turn it on, just hums. I pulled bottom pannel and when I turn it on I can see the motor jump. Trys to turn but only moves a half inch or so and hums. Pulled the thre screws holding the motor on {oh and it wont pull out) and by turning the housing it rotates freely. The problem seems to be behind that... in the pump? I pulled the top screen off and can feel the little propeller/pump thing. Nothing seems to be jamed in there. I can turn it some... slow only so far. Is it maybe an o ring or seal sticking? How do I unstick it???? Thanks in advance!

Re: GE nautilus wont run

These motors were famous for the seal sticking to shaft. If this is an older unit turn the fan on motor by hand until it breaks free. Do this with power off.

No, don't use your hand after it has been running. It's hot! But turning the fan with a couple of screwdrivers until it breaks free and spins freely does work.

My GE Nautilus portable dishwasher will take water in, the motor will hum for a few minutes and then drain out into the sink. This process repeats but the water never cycles inside to actually wash the...

Try manually adding water to the dishwasher. If it works then the water valve is just clogged. Sometimes it gets full of gunk and the machine will take in water but not enough to run properly. It is in the upside down cup shaped thing on the bottom left front. The other possibility is the Cam/Timer. It is in the door right behind the dial. This is the part that triggers all the different actions.
If when you add water it doesn't work then the valve or the solenoid on the pump assembly is likely done.

This would be the motor that spins the dish washing unit in the bottom. The noise you hear might mean that the motor will need to be replaced.

The pump motor may be stuck. If this is the case, as it often is with a GE dishwasher, you can break it loose (e.g. spin the impeller until it doesn't spring back any more). If it's not stuck, it may have something inside of the pump motor and it may need to be replaced.

You need to prime the dishwasher by placing two large cups of water into the bottom.

Motor not running?

There is a pump motor underneath with an impeller that is most likely stuck. You will need to turn the impeller until it breaks loose if it is stuck. This is a common problem with GE dishwashers and I recommend that you run it at least once or twice a week to avoid this problem in the future, even if you have to run it empty.

if the dishwasher has not been used for a few weeks, the water in the sump that goes into the pump will evaporate causing the pump to freeze up. usually you can turn the fins inside the motor to free it up. make sure the dishwasher is not on when you do this.

Humming noise

I have seen this SOOOOO many times in my 35+ years in the appliance repair is very you are this is an answer I provided someone with the exact problem not to long ago..............

This is a typical GE problem which I have seen many times...When a DW sets for a while not being used...the motor often freezes up....Take the front (lower panel off....find the motor assembly...(with the DW unplugged!!...very important) reach in with you hand or a screw driver...preferably your the back of the motor...there should be a impeller should be able to reach in with a finger and pull it may be resistant so find a way to hold it in place as you reach up to the next impeller blade and pull down further...finally it will all of a sudden free up....after which you plug it back in and start it up...I am also including a step by step (no drain problem check list as you may run into an issue like this if it has not been operated for a while ....notice article # 5).

1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there's anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

This is an add on I thought about later...if you know someone who has or if you have or can get and electrical spray (cleaner/lubricant) it has to be nonconducting......spray for electric motors or will help prevent this to a degree and the motor will run better.

I hope this helps...Good Luck and good day.....please rate my effort...the Fang
