Question about Brother MFC-5460CN All-In-One InkJet Printer
Machine says that magenta is empty, cartridge level reads empty. But when I put a new magenta cartridge in it reads no cartridge open cover and reinstall magenta cartridge. The cartridge is full and is a compatible cartridge not brother brand. I have tried 2 different cartridges and am getting the same error message
The tape method worked for me on my 1960C. I put duct tape over the window in the front. If there's a place you can see ink, cover it up.

Third place I'm posting this today... This solution worked for me:
This is a simple fix. This printer uses a LIGHT SENSOR to detect if the cartridge is installed properly. Numerous things can allow extra light to enter... your solution is this:
Get electrical tape (duct tape may be too thick) and cover the rear sides of your cartridge; along with the recessed square shaped area that is directly in the center of your cartridge. Cut the tape so that you can cover this area without impeding the shape of the cartridge (so it can still be inserted and removed easily) I have used this solution to repair this exact problem on MFC-665CW when installing a continuous ink supply (in place of the original cartridges) You can actually just tape the internal sensor and close the front cover if you want to test it without any cartridge at all (though its not a good idea to print like that as I"m not sure if it will damage the unit) Those of you wishing to only buy Black ink can attempt this if you dont care about voiding the warranty or possibly breaking the unit... just cover the other slots with electric tape.

Buy a original magenta one and install it. If your lucky the error will disappear.
If not, be sure that the compatible ones have stained the circuit board of the indicator. In that case you need a new cart. case.

I have this problem with my 5460CN and read about this taping thing. I just can't figure out where the tape goes! Tried about everyplace I think. Anyone have a photo to show me where the tape goes?

Your machine is equipped with an ink dot
counter. The ink dot counter automatically
monitors the level of ink in each of the 4
cartridges. When the machine detects an ink
cartridge is running out of ink, the machine
will tell you with a message on the LCD.
The LCD will tell you which ink cartridge is low
or needs replacing. Be sure to follow the LCD
prompts to replace the ink cartridges in the
Even though the machine tells you that an ink
cartridge is empty, there will be a small
amount of ink left in the ink cartridge. It is
necessary to keep some ink in the ink
cartridge to prevent air from drying out and
damaging the print head assembly.
a Open the ink cartridge cover.
If one or more ink cartridges are empty,
for example Black, the LCD shows
Ink Empty Black and
b Pull the lock release lever down and
take out the ink cartridge for the color
shown on the LCD.
c Open the new ink cartridge bag for the
color shown on the LCD, and then take
out the ink cartridge.
d Remove the protective yellow cap (1).
If the protective yellow caps come off
when you open the bag, the cartridge will
not be damaged.
e Each color has its own correct position.
Insert the ink cartridge in the direction of
the arrow on the label.
f Lift each lock release lever and push it
until it clicks, and then close the ink
g If you replaced an ink cartridge, the LCD
may ask you to verify that it was a brand
new one. (For example,
Did You Change Blck?) For each
new cartridge you installed, press 1
(Yes) to automatically reset the ink dot
counter for that color. If the ink cartridge
you installed is not a brand new one, be
sure to press 2 (No).
If you wait until the LCD shows
Near Empty and Ink Empty, the
machine will automatically.
