Bought a new compaq presario CQ56 and after entering new log on password, it will now not recognise it when i attempt to log on. the pass word hint is there which i created, but the password keeps saying...

try another administrator user OR try restating in safe mode, (F8 on startup - safe mode with or without networking doesn't really matter) if you can chose administrator and have that password (if any) you can go to the user control in teh control panel and reset the password for your account there.

Passord for home pc will not work what do i do to log in our home computer is a HP and my son set his password but now forgot it and we cannot log in on any users how do i get logged in without the startup...

Try to press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. The screen have to change and a dialog to appear with Username/Password.
Type "Administrator" (without the quotes) for username and leave password empty. Press Enter. If you can log in as administrator in that way, you can force set password for your user account in Control Panel/User Accounts

My laptop poweron password forget

login password or startup password? Startup password can be bypassed by removing the CMOS battery on the motherboard, shorting the memory pins and replacing the battery and restarting.
If it is the login password, if you are on a domain the domain admin should be able to reset it; if not, did you create a password recovery disk? Is there more than one username on the laptop, and can one of those other users log in and reset your password?

Logs on ok then shows no icons and goes straight to logging off

Got any enemies? :)

This is a long shot but i used to play this prank on people in college.

Put a logoff or shutdown shortcut in their startup folder. As soon as the PC starts up, it immediately shuts down or logs off.

I think safe mode is the best way to fix that, but again that is probably not the problem.

Laptop CMOS battery

This is for Winbook WinBest 233MMX may be good for other Winbooks
Had trouble booting then just quit booting altogether...
For a quick fix that won't require soldering....
Replace the cmos battery2.gif. If it is more than 7 years old, it will most likely be weak or dead.
Remove the keyboard by sliding the KB toward you and lift the top up and slide out, Remove KB ribbon cable2.gif from connector by pulling on the plastic tab, remove the 4pin KB power connector. Then remove bottom screws and separate the case.
Locate the 3V battery, Pry the top tab of the 3v battery off the welded ends with a small needlenose, Pry the battery off the mini board, bend battery tabs so the new non-tabbed battery will be squeezing the new battery for contact, + is up!, add a piece of electrical tape to secure it from sliding. Replace bottom case and screws and then re-attach keyboard2.gif ribbon cable and 4 wire power connector. Re-boot and reset cmos ( CTRL-ALT-S ) on boot. Set your time. You must set the boot sequence to C:. It will then auto boot to C: WALLA! WIN98!
