Bad transmission, bad drive belt, bad pulley lots of things could go bad try your belt first or take it to your nearest lawn and garden shop they'll uselly charge a 15 dollar diagnostic fee but 99% of the time they'll tell you what it is for sure

SOURCE: MTD 42 inch hydrostatic drive lawnmower

1...first and foremost check the fluid level and top off with mobil 1 full synthetic 20w50 oil,
2...check the the engine pulley for wear
3...check idler arm spring tention.
inside yout transmission is a center pump section and swash plates and a set of 6-8 pistons , if dirt is allowed into the transmission it causes severe wear to these parts

my recomendation would be to dissasemble the transmission and inspect the pump center section and swash plates for wear....look for tiny scratches on the bearing surfaces, if it is worn then replace parts as needed. these worn parts will cause the transmission to "growl" or as you say "grind"

SOURCE: lt1000 hydrostatic drive stuck - will not engauge or disengauge

Does the tractor try to move or **** in any direction, if so you may want to check to see if the disk that controls the brakes is stuck, I've seen this many times.

SOURCE: my 4210 4x4 with hydrostatic

Hi, the engine will power the hydrostatic drive via a drive belt. See that this belt is in place or if it is worn out and loose. By replacing this belt you should get your machine running again. Hope this helps

I cannot get any speed from my MTD/Yardman riding lawnmower. I have change the belts. It will engage But just will NOT go very fast. It is a sem-automatic.

Your yardman mower is a hydrostatic model which uses a small hydraulic pump to turn a hydraulic drive motor.Check there is sufficient oil in the transmission. Check the forward/reverse lever travel, and adjust as needed to increase the "throw" to move the swashplate in the hydraulic motor.

Wont move forward or reverse-- transmission??

Does it have gears or a hydrostatic (automatic) transmission?

If it's a gear model, sounds like a loose drive belt.

If it's hydrostatic, it could be a belt problem or a problem inside the transmission. If it's a tranmission problem, this is not good. Many of the transmissions on riding lawn mowers are not serviceable - they are just replaced.

Lawnmower will not move in gear with motor running

Hi
Check to see if any oil leaks between rear wheels where the tractor was parked. Also make sure hydrostatic disengage lever, at rear of tractor by hitch, has to be pushed in.

Hydrostatic mower goes in reverse but not forward. Only 73 hrs on it!

On my hydrostatic there is an adjustment on the forward/back lever which can be made to run all reverse or all forward. Normal setting gives both of course. Look at that adjustment. Maybe something let go.
