Tip & How-To about Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Edition Operating System Pushed May 2015

Within the past week (2nd week in May 2015) Amazon *pushed* a new operating system onto my Kindle Paperwhite. I connected to Wi-Fi in order to synchronize, download, etc. and I left it connected for a while and I went and did something else. When I returned, it had gone into the sleep mode because it was not being actively used. When I brought it out of sleep mode I saw there was a notice on the home screen about it having been updated and to go to the Cloud and download the 2nd Edition of the Operators Manual.

But, here's the rub - the 3G Whispernet wouldn't connect or, more precisely, it said it was connected but it wouldn't do or display anything but a blank white area. I got to thinking maybe it had something to do with the new operating system not having been rebooted. Always, it seems, new operating systems must be rebooted. So I used the Menu button > Settings > Menu button again > Restart. (Not *Reset Device* which is directly below so be sure not to touch it by mistake) and my Kindle shut down. I gave it about ten seconds and it didn't restart so I pushed the power button and it restarted and went through the boot screen and progress bar.

When it started up again it went to my PIN screen where I entered the PIN and it went to a Home Screen I'd never seen before. It consisted of a bunch of book covers with some adverts for recommended books at the bottom.Well, I found out by reading the new 2nd Edition Operator's manual that I downloaded from the Cloud that the *Cover View* is the default with this new O/S and, if one wants the old familiar *List View* back, to just touch the Menu icon (three horizontal bars in the upper right) and select *List View* which returned my Kindle to the Home Page I was used to.

There are several other changes as well so do download and read the 2nd Edition Operator's Manual. Oh, BTW, the 3G and Wi-Fi works again. I've got a sneaky suspicion that the new O/S needed the Restart in order to properly register the device so it could connect.

i can't access the kindle store

Are you out of your usual wi-fi area? You may need to go back and check wi-fi settings and set up again.
From Home or any Settings screen, view the wireless indicators at the upper right corner of your Kindle. While reading, tap the top of the screen to view the wireless indicators.
Wireless Indicator Description Your Kindle is connected to 3G. This may also say EDGE or GPRS.
Note: For 3G enabled devices only Your Kindle is connected to a Wi-Fi network and has a strong signal. The Wi-Fi symbol appears when in range of a trusted Wi-Fi network.

can not connect to Wi-Fi

Do you mean for the Amazon Kindle store? Provided your wi-fi signal is good, which you can check by trying it with a smartphone etc, the Paperwhite should connect itself to Amazon automatically when in range. If not, try these things

- verify the Pw (Paperwhite) is registered properly (ie Amazon knows it)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201235720

- check your network is listed already on the Pw
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=help_search_1-1?ie=UTF8&nodeId=201241790&qid=1457135457&sr=1-1

- generally speaking
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201852540

If you are talking about wi-fi and using the Pw internet brower, forget that, it is not worth the effort, the Pw browser is such a non-intuitive dog of a thing.

I get message kindle store encountered an unexpected error I now cannot books please correct the error

Amazon very recently slipped an operating system update on Kindle Paperwhite users. They downloaded it to mine when I was connected to Wi-Fi and I never even noticed it. But, I did get a new
title on the home page that it had been upgraded and to go to the Cloud and download the new Users Manual. But, what I noticed is that it never did a restart and I think it needs to do a restart in order for it to solidify the new operating system. I also couldn't connect to the Store with the new O/S.

I did a manual Restart. This is how to do it:

1) on the Homescreen touch the icon that consists of three horizontal bars (upper right)

2) on the drop down menu touch *Settings*

3) Again touch the icon with three horizontal bars.

4) On the drop down menu, touch *Restart* being careful to NOT touch *Reset Device*

Your Kindle will shut down. Now push the power button and wait
for it to reboot. It will take a minute or two but it will process and solidify the new O/S and it should be good to connect to the Store
again.

At least mine did. I'm hoping yours will, too.
