Question about HP OmniBook XE3 Notebook
If you have a dark display but can see the windows logo etc. faintly then buy a new inverter 14.99 from us on ebay if the screen is flickering or coloured lines it maybe the lcd harness is trapped or is connections failing etc 7.99 yes sometimes the rubber which detects the lid is closed sticks or even just a simple function key press with no5 etc. or whatever the external display button is all that is needed as it is just displaying on an external monitor of course the graphic chip on the mobo might be failing or the lcd is brocken - we sell screens for £50 - r3000 r4000 nx9110 nx9105 all use the same screens inverters harnesses etc. check the inverter needed is for a 15.4 or 15.1" screen :) shop - hpnotebooks

Above answer is great, but it won't help tell if it is the inverter or the backlight. Easy to tell, since there was DC in and nothing out. Not very difficult to remove the frame of the display and swap the inverter out. Once I put the new inverter in, I got 115 VAC out. I would guess if you had the AC then the backlight would be the problem.

first off is this a new computer and or is it still under warranty ?
If so then after doing what i suggest then maybe you need to take it back to the place you bought it.
If not still under warranty, try this either way to check that it is the monitor or not. In the back of the laptop there is a place to hook up a external monitor.
If you have a desktop computer use its monitor to see if the laptop is in fact working, by plugging it into that port.
If in fact it works and you can use the laptop connected to that monitor then its your display, the back light probably wet bad .
Also another way to check is, if you can get a bright light and shine it on the screen and the back light is dark, you still will see stuff on the screen.
Anyway give this a try its an easy way to check at no cost.
