I have a dell 3000 dimension desk top computer. The message I get after tapping the F12 key is as follows. Key board failure. Type password and press enter to leave password security enabled next line

The motherboard BIOS is activated when you press the F12 Key and can be locked via a password that is different from your pc user account. There is only one way to reset this because the BIOS is a chip on the motherboard. You have to reset the password using a jumper on the motherboard that is marked with PSWD. This will also clear the CMOS which is Computer Memory on Startup which tells the computer the different changes from the original bios chip. so you may have to go in and set some settings in the bios to have everything back to operational.

Turn off and unplug the tower before opening it.

The password jumper's location on a Dell Dimension motherboard can be found by reviewing the Dimension User Guides.
For most Dell Dimension desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:
  • Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
  • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
  • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.
Now replace the panel and plug unit back in. You should be able to enter the bios without a password.

Hello, you can download this tool here:

Dell

The official method is to contact Dell Technical Support. Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of the Latitude. If the current user is not the original Latitude owner, Dell will transfer the used Latitude's registration from the original owner with only the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the tag on the laptop.

  • For most Dell Dimension desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:

    • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
    • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
    • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.

Try the backdoor password: Dell

The another method is: by Using the Motherboard Jumper: In most motherboards CMOS battery is soldered, which makes it difficult to remove the battery. In this case we use another method.
Almost all motherboards contain a jumper that can clear all CMOS settings along with the BIOS password. The location of this jumper varies depending upon the motherboard brand. You should read your motherboard manual to check its location. If you don't have the manual then look for the jumpers near the CMOS battery. Most of the manufacturer label the jumper as CLR, CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, etc.
When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.
Make sure to turn the PC off, and remove the battery and power cord
( if it is a laptop ) before you continue.

Here is a picture how it looks like:

The default setting is:pin 1 to 2, to clear cmos: 2 to 3.

Best of luck :-)

How do I reset my lost bios password for Dell Precision M70

Hi,
If you cannot access the machine after if has been powered up, it is still possible to get past the BIOS password. The BIOS password is stored in CMOS memory that is maintained while the PC is powered off by a small battery, which is attached to the motherboard. If you remove this battery, all CMOS information (including the BIOS password) will be lost. You will need to re-enter the correct CMOS setup information to use the machine. The machines owner or user will most likely be alarmed when it is discovered that the BIOS password has been deleted.
On some motherboards, the battery is soldered to the motherboard, making it difficult to remove. If this is the case, you have another alternative. Somewhere on the motherboard you should find a jumper that will clear the BIOS password. If you have the motherboard documentation, you will know where that jumper is. If not, the jumper may be labeled on the motherboard. If you are not fortunate enough for either of these to be the case, you may be able to guess which jumper is the correct jumper. This jumper is usually standing alone near the battery. If you cannot locate this jumper, you might short both of the points where the battery connects to the motherboard.
If all else fails, you may have to clear the BIOS password by resetting the RTC (Real Time Clock) IC (Integrated Circuit) on your motherboard.
The BIOS password may be cleared from a Dell Optiplex by removing the password jumper (PSWD) from the motherboard.
The location of the password jumper on a Dell Optiplex motherboard can be found by reviewing the Optiplex User Guides.
For most Dell Optiplex desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:
  • Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
  • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
  • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.
Each Dell Inspiron has a master password which will clear the BIOS password. You can get this number by calling Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896.
Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of your Inspiron.

Thank You,
Your Support Tech.
