I have the same problem - LCD is black for playback and recording, but touch screen buttons respond (just you can't see them) if you guess where they are. Viewfinder is fine for recording and playback.. Have contacted Sony UK via email (awaiting repsonse) and also spoke to them. The problem with the CCD where Sony are fixing (until Sept 08) for free is slightly different to this, and the girl I spoke to said that the DCR-HC42E is not a camera on their list for the free repairs as it is not a recognised fault with the camera. Only option I have been given is to send to their service centre at a cost of £175. Am going to complain further and will post updates. Suggest that anyone with this problem contacts Sony - http://support.sony-europe.com/contacts/contacts.aspx?l=en&tp=cic

There is nothing user friendly on these, if your not factory trained on this type of repair then it should be done by someone who is. The view finder is a small LCD and is not meant to be repaired, but they can be replaced. Get an estimate and decide if you want to repair or live without it,
Hi i had the same problem and i got it for the second time. can i please know how to remove the camera so i can replace the strip my self. And do u have a service manual. if so can i know where to get one for my self. thanks
Just look for the post by 'airshod'. He has even put up a couple of links to pdf files with photos of the whole procedure. I used them and got mine fixed. Exactly the same problem as yours.
Be careful, though: Jackstar's (aka airshod) instructions leave this out, which you will discover after putting the whole camera back together (which is a pain): the ViewFinder (VF) will go dead, plus the picture in the LCD will not reverse when you reverse the LCD panel (which means that when you flip the panel to watch yourself while you video yourself, the picture will be upside-down, although you don't need to worry about it being recorded properly, of course. It's just a pain to aim the correctly when it's not showing the right way up!). Airshod had the same happen to him.
If you need further info on the VF dying after re-assembly, look at this link:
Unfortunately I won't have time to try the suggestion for a while, so I won't be of much help. I guess a camera is more useful with a broken VF and a working LCD panel, than the other way around.
Sony really ought to have addressed this issue by now. It's not reasonable to expect the camera to loose its LCD after only a year or two!
the flex wire of the lcd monitor is already cut and already left is on
the touch screen that why is functioning ...go the sony service for the
replacing flex wire...or to the other service center for fixing the
