I have the same problem. I saw some other posts that say that the CCD for the LCD has gone bad and that Sony will replace it for free even though the Camcorder is out of warranty. I don't believe that. Some other post says that the flex cable connecting to the LCD screen has gone bad and Sony will not replace that for free. It seems that your only choice is to contact Sony and fight with their support people to see if you can get it fixed for free. I doubt it. Their standard charge for any repair is over $200. You can get another Camcorder for that price.

Hi, I too have the same problem. The LCD screen went off all of a sudden. However, the only difference is that if I bend the LCD screeb towards camcorder, it blinks and starts working if left untouched and bent at that particular angle. In case I try to move the screen it would again go off. Please suggest some remedy.

I have the same problem - LCD is black for playback and recording, but touch screen buttons respond (just you can't see them) if you guess where they are. Viewfinder is fine for recording and playback.. Have contacted Sony UK via email (awaiting repsonse) and also spoke to them. The problem with the CCD where Sony are fixing (until Sept 08) for free is slightly different to this, and the girl I spoke to said that the DCR-HC42E is not a camera on their list for the free repairs as it is not a recognised fault with the camera. Only option I have been given is to send to their service centre at a cost of £175. Am going to complain further and will post updates. Suggest that anyone with this problem contacts Sony -

Sony UK have come back denying that there is an inherent problem with this camera (depsite me providing links to the threads on this site). Only solution provided is for me to pay for repairs at their service centre (at a cost of £175). Have challenged without luck. Urge people to make Sony aware if you have this probelm (if you want I can send on the email chains I sent for you to forward on to them as evidence that someone has encountered - my email address is

My SONY DCR-DVD405 Viewfinder has stopped working. When the LCD panel is closed, the viewfinder should show the view and the controls, but it is showing a blank grey screen. Please advise.

There is nothing user friendly on these, if your not factory trained on this type of repair then it should be done by someone who is. The view finder is a small LCD and is not meant to be repaired, but they can be replaced. Get an estimate and decide if you want to repair or live without it,

LCD screen not working on my Sony Hc 42 camcorder

The LCD cable is faulty. You need to replace the LCD cable from SONY authorised service center.

It's a common problem as this cable is bend each time when we open the LCD screen, so the cable become faulty.

DCR HC-42 LCD screen problem
Just look for the post by 'airshod'. He has even put up a couple of links to pdf files with photos of the whole procedure. I used them and got mine fixed. Exactly the same problem as yours.
Be careful, though: Jackstar's (aka airshod) instructions leave this out, which you will discover after putting the whole camera back together (which is a pain): the ViewFinder (VF) will go dead, plus the picture in the LCD will not reverse when you reverse the LCD panel (which means that when you flip the panel to watch yourself while you video yourself, the picture will be upside-down, although you don't need to worry about it being recorded properly, of course. It's just a pain to aim the correctly when it's not showing the right way up!). Airshod had the same happen to him.
If you need further info on the VF dying after re-assembly, look at this link:

Unfortunately I won't have time to try the suggestion for a while, so I won't be of much help. I guess a camera is more useful with a broken VF and a working LCD panel, than the other way around.
Sony really ought to have addressed this issue by now. It's not reasonable to expect the camera to loose its LCD after only a year or two!

LCD screen stopped working

sounds like the LCD screen viewfinder may have been twisted or accidentally catched or got hooked or snagged on on something at one stage and pulled something, if the screen went yellow it means the three wires going to it are possibly broken or the small white clip was slowly coming undone inside the Viewfinder for the red and green to no longer work to complete the image also indicates why the buttons on the viewfinder are not responding, try twisting the viewfinder very lightly whilst on, but most likely the small white clip holding the wires has come off at the elbow inside the camera
