Seagate SanMax 120GB external with fan noise

The internal fan of this SanMax, purchased April 2007, is making noise. Do I need to replace the fan, run it with the fan off, or replace the drive?

It depends on the noise. It should be still under warranty. You should NEVER operate it without a fan as this is a safety hazard. If it is making a noise like a buzzsaw, it is most likely the bearings of the HD mechanism. If it is making a scraping noise, it's likely the fan. Make use of the warranty if/while you still can!

I bought my seagate free agent go in april of 2011 and registered it as well. I have all my important work layouts on this and the usb connector on the external hard drive broke off and now i cant connect...

First, since you purchased the product in 4/11, you should contact the manufacturer for a replacement housing for the hard drive. If that's unsuccessful (or if you don't have that much time), you can purchase an external docking station. Then remove the hard drive from it's case and insert it into the docking station.

Possibly but if the noise is back again after replacing the disk, I would check into overheating. If you have access to an air compressor, blow out the case, fans, heatsinks, and power supply. Block the fan blades before cleaning fans as you do not want to over spin the fans which might damage the bearings.

Was the disk an external as your posting indicates? or an internal drive?

The connector of my seagate free agent 160gb is broken, can i bypass the connection with an other adaptor in the internal hard drive

Solution No1:
You'll need to take it apart desolder existing cable and solder a new one (standart you can get in any sho).
Note: If you'll mix up wires than you can damage your motherboard or hard drive itself.

Solution No2:
Take it apart, remove hard drive, buy a new 2.5" SATA Caddy and fit you hard drive to it.

Lost power supply

I think you might find this link most useful, from the Seagate Community Forums.

In short, others have had great difficulty buying Maxtor replacement power adapters, however you can buy a generic 12V, 3A DC power supply for $15-20 from a number of sources. Confirm your actual power requirements by referring to the product label on the drive itself.

Hope it helps,
Mike

Lightly Dropped Seagate 100GB External Hard Drive

Unfortunately, this probably means the read/write heads were jarred and can no longer function properly. That's usually fixable, but it's a very expensive fix because the parts are inside the hard drive and the data surfaces are very delicate... Most people are better off simply replacing the hard drive unless the data is absolutely vital.
