My powermate has a little pedal on the bag of the beaterbar housing that you press all the way down with your foot and then release. Each time you press down it changes the height from 'xlo' to 'lo' to 'med' to 'high' and then it starts over again.

Hi! Probably too late to help the original asker, but I have this same machine and was having the exact same problem. 4 beep error message, but mine would not sew at all. Found this question through a google search, but no answer. But I figured it out! I had left the buttonhole lever down!! (Facepalm) I hope this is helpful to future googlers with a similar problem.
If I remember correctly,on the switch itself,each connector is letter coded.'W' for white,'R' for red,and so forth.The manual mostly talks about how to change attachments and basic operating,but not repairs.
