70 HP evinrude 4 stroke outboard (pontoon boat). New spark plugs all connections good. Will only do idle speed put I. Forward or reverse won't gain speed


I had the same problem with mine, let me see if I can find the picture I took.

Just above the red arrow on the choke, the linkage has to be firmly clipped in that little black clip. Unless that is in place, you are only throttling one carburetor! Drove me crazy trying to find the answer to that one and it happened after the marina engineers had replaced a leaking fuel hose. Mine was a two stroke, but I bet the linkages are the same to the carbs.

It sounds like the high speed passages in the carb are gummed up. If you have not done so already, you should probably rebuild the carb.

I'm assuming it's the 2.8, I'm not sure when they started putting the 4.3 V6 in them.
Anyway, a few things come to mind when something won't idle.1. EGR valves. If they are open at idle, it won't idle. It's open at cruising speeds when the engine is warm, but not at idle or full throttle.
2. Idle air controller (IAC): This is a little electrical valve located on the side of the throttle body. It regulates the amount of air that the engine needs to idle at the correct speed. It makes up for stuff like cold temps, being in gear, or having the A/C on at idle. They also get full of junk and jam up, or simply fail electrically. Replacement is extremely simple.
3. Ignition timing. If the timing is late (********), engine vacuum is lowered and it struggles to idle, even without the load of a transmission in gear.
4. Vacuum leaks. Crunchy old vacuum hoses make everything worse.

have a look on side of carby should see 3 small screws a high and a low idle screw , when running unsrew the high idle srew slightly and it should fix

Turn both jet needles CW to stops (lightly), then turn each screw out CCW 1-1/2 turns. This is a basic setting which should allow the engine to start and run. Start the engine and allow to warm up, then pull the throttle full on. Adjust H needle CW until the engine starts to speed up, but still 4-stroking. Proper final adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle CW for better idle, but still allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Set the idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine will continue to idle. Hope this helps!

I have a 572 crate motor 620hp. Car runs great on highway.But if i get at low rpm or traffic and come to stop car wants to stall. Seems like carb is problem . I see you changed to holleys Why? Is this a...


Try setting the idle speed up a little--the racing cam in this engine will not allow idle very well at best. An improvement in the ignition system performance will help starting. This engine wasn't made to poop around in traffic.
