Open the door , place a philips screw driver blade under the latch catch and pull out at the same time as you press the handle release
in effect the door is already in the closed position before you try to close it

Golf tdi wagon rear boor wont latch

check to see if the latch is not already half closed. If so use a round bar( Phillips screwdriver) that will fit under the latch and pull out while trying to open the door
sometimes the latch will move to half closed and will be in the wrong position to fully engage the retainer

My rear passenger door won't shut because the child lock is stuck in place. it was on and when i tried flipping it down it got stuck and will not budge. what do i do?

Sounds like the latch closed on you. Make sure the door is unlocked, then pull up on the outer door handle, take a small screw driver to reach into the latch to pop it open. the door should then close normally.

You can look at the front doors latch to see what it is supposed to look like first, it may help.

Other wise you will have to replace the door latch, witch is a fairly common problem on those. And not much fun to do.

Door will not stay closed

Sounds like the latch is seized or the tension spring is broke.
You'll probably have to replace the latch.

Rear passenger door won't stay closed

Door latch on door itself is in closed position if it will not close at all. In this case, open door and pull outside handle hard to pop open door latch. If you have door opening at random, door latch needs replacing or door catch on body is loose.

My rear passenger side door will not close

Just use the outside door handle and pull on the latch that is closed. If you use the inside door handle then you will have to undo the child lock.
Pull on the latched that is closed while holding the outside door handle....Make sure that it is unlocked...

Thought door was frozen shut on 96 grand am se so pulled it open and now it won't close latch not engaged and door lines up but won't stay latched shut....

The latch may already be latched like it is closed. You can take a screw driver and put it.. where the latch engages Slightly pry outward agianst the latch while pulling on the door handle. That should release the latch. If you continue to have the problem than the latch will have to be replaced because there is a plastic piece that may be worn out.You will have to remove the door panel to replace the latch. They sell a book on that car that will explain how to remove the door handle(at O'rielly).

Rear door won't stay shut

Check the latch mechanism on the door. There is a piece of the latch that closes around the clasp on the door frame. sometimes this closes when the door is open and you can't shut the door. Take a screw driver and flip this latch piece open and close the door.
